Gaming and pavillion thoughts.

We are in the middle of a great combat scene, but I just finished killing an abyssal undead ghoul or something nasty (and I am a cleric/rogue of all things) by backstabbing it (with the help of a special spell). It not only killed the ghoul, and saved a friend, it invoked a ritual action that will end up improving my special rapier to a more potent version.

Anyway, I've been thinking about later this year, and events in the SCA that I will be able to attend (I will be going to a few days of GWW!!!). I do have a simple gazebo thing I was going to use, but the cover is already faded, and a part of me just really wants to make my own pavillion that will last longer. I may even see about just recovering the frame I have already.

So, I've been reading my copy of Seasons, an old SCA A&S magazine I got from casketgirl (with great thanks), and read the info on the pavillion inside for a French noble's tent. Well... after reading the semi-confusing instructions therein, I realized it was actually sewing up the entire pavillion together into one solid, heavy, and massive tentage. Uh, no way. I know that pavillions can be made with segments of wall sections for ease in putting up, taking down, and allowing for some walls to be removed for air circulation as needed.

So, I wandered around the web and found this nifty site, on how to improve a tent (of your choice) with simple feats of modern engineering (for dummies like me). Actually pretty simple improvements, really, for the most part. The thing with the staples I don't get... me, I am thinking of glue stick as a temporary measure for basting the fabric edges, not staples that have to be removed after sewing and leaves holes. But I do like that the grommets will be reinforced, and that the sewing can be easily done on my home machine since there won't be a lot of layers to sew through. And I already have fabric tape and webbings, in bulk amounts.

I still want to do a rectangular pavillion, kinda marquee style. I want my pavillion to have one segment that is closed off for my bedroom & clothing area, and an open section or an attached canopy to sit comfortably under and do stuff there where the breezes can flow. This is why the idea of having a pavillion that is all sewn together really bothered me. I know how stuffy closed off pavillions can get in our warm summers (not to mention the h3!! trying to sew it all together.

Anyway, I just wanted to write some thoughts on this for remembering later. I won't have time until after April, probably not until summertime. So, now I can put it to rest for a bit until I have time.
