I reserve the right...

I am bored, so I am reading online news sources, like msnbc.com. Well, one link is to a gay couple that emailed all their friends telling them not to support a particular gardener/landscaper, because that private company doesn't want to work for gay people. Here's the story.

So, there is a link on that page asking if a private company has the right not to do business for gay people. Not a governmental company, or a public company, but a private mom & pop shop type of company. Which got me thinking. As liberal and progressive as I am, do I think a private company has the right to refuse service to one portion of the population?

And I realized that yes, they do, at least in my opinion. Why? Because they are a private company and should have the right to pick and choose who they want to work for. I feel I should have the right to pick and choose who I want to work for. If I knew, for example, that someone who was a huge racist wanted me to make them a costume for their Klu Klux Klan operations, or something like that, then I would want the right to refuse service to such a racist. And I would avoid other people whose obvious ideals did not mesh with my own.

Now, I don't have such a problem, and to discriminate against a certain set of people of whatever background may limit my income potential, but I would want to reserve the right to serve the people I want to serve, and not serve others, as horrible as that might sound to someone reading this.

And to add to my list, I will not work for women haters, or those who call me a "Jap" (I hate that term as much as African Americans dislike the N word), and those who have not bathed recently, since I do have to get close enough to measure them and fit them (and I promise to do the same). Otherwise, I reserve the right to chose who I want to work for, and not work for. It should be my right. After all, there are many other costumers out there people can chose from.

Oh, and I also do not appreciate anyone who would threaten to sodomize children just because they disagreed with a couple's decision to not work for a gay couple. That is just downright beyond the Pale in threats.
