Peering Down From Ivory Towers

It seems as if there is a whole group of business leaders in the region who think they know so much more than their subordinates that they take literally all strategic decisions into their own hands.

It may be that employees from previous generations had little opportunity to go abroad or see different systems for themselves, and this had to depend on their managers to provide strategic direction. However, staff these days are much better travelled than before, and probably have seen more than their directors due to their specialization and interests. So it would be a tragic waste not to tap on their ideas and expertise. They are, after all, usually much better educated than their superiors, even if you take falling educational standards into account.

Taking strategic decisions away, removes a sense of ownership, and also takes away an intrinsic motivational factor, since staff just feel that they are there only for the wage at the end of each month. This sense of detachment would then lead to the mediocre performance as they get disengaged from work.

So, when will these business leaders realize that their cheese has been moved? Or are the harsh realities of mortgage commitments that trap employees to their jobs going to fool them into still believing that their employees are happy when they are actually disengaged?
