Not too long ago, it was decided by the powers that be, that the Housing & Development would cease to build 3-room flats. This was in part to the apparent rising affluences of Singaporeans. Then there was an economic recession, and many people were forced to downgrade. 3-room flats like mine became a scarce commodity, and people started speculating. So, the HDB relented, and started building 3-room flats. Today, I read in the papers that they are even thinking of 2-room flats! I thought we were saying that the economy was doing great, and jobs were plentiful? If so, why would we need such low-cost housing? Well, at least it is better than refusing to admit to the demand for cheap housing, and making people sleep rough...
