Apple Launches New iMacs

Apple launched a new line of iMacs that feature the second generation i-Core processors. Available in both 21.5-inch and 27-inch models, they feature quad-core i5 chips, with the option of upgrading to the more powerful i7 chips. The graphics ability has also been upgraded with the introduction of the AMD HD6750M, HD6770M and HD6970M cards. The top 27-inch iMac model also has the option of increasing video DDR5 RAM to 2 TB.

Also featured are the Thunderbolt ports that were incorporated in the MacBook Pro notebooks earlier this year. The 21.5-inch model has one port, while the 27-inch model has two. This means that the 27-inch model can drive two additional external monitors, giving a huge screen real estate of three monitors.

The build-to-order options include incorporating 256 GB SSD with a 1 TB or 2 TB HDD. This enables the OS to be saved in the SSD, giving ultra-fast boot-up, and yet keeping storage costs reasonable by saving data on HDD. The top model 27-inch iMac can be kitted up with the i7-2600K chip, running 4 cores and 8 threads at up to 3.4 GHz, and can have up to 2 GB of video memory and 16 GB of conventional memory. With all the optional extras, including 256 GB SSD and 2 TB HDD, the cost of the computer comes to just over S$5000 (less on education discount).
