The New Year and the Future

As we look to the year ahead and our future, we should look at the trends of the recent past. I find it disturbing that the population of Singapore is on the rise, but the rise in non-citizens is responsible for the bulk of it. Knowing the fertility rate in Singapore, even the rise in local citizens is due to foreigners that have taken up citizenship. So what happens to the true-blue Singaporeans? I know that many think that the second-generation Singaporeans (children of the new citizens from China and India) will be more assimilated to the local culture, however many of these new immigrants insist on keeping their families separate from local communities and practices.

Then we have the commitment to raising the per capita GDP and trying to spread it to the rest of the population. Do you honestly believe that? With one of the favourable tax policies for the rich? Especially when we keep importing cheap labour from the region? Have we looked at ways of being more self-sufficient? At this rate, we may try to outsource even our own defence. How about outsourcing government? Bill Clinton might like a nice retirement income package...
