Singapore National Transport Policies

So the government is trying to curb the congestion on the roads by getting motorists to pay more ERP. They say that they hope to get more people to use public transport, and will be improve public transport infrastructure.

More MRT lines and stations are nice, and so are more bus routes. However, I think that they will not tackle a very important issue about the timeliness of the bus services.

The AYE corridor is one where improvements are to be made. As a person who uses the public transport in this corridor, I do not think they are addressing the problem at all. They talk about increasing service frequency, but the real need on the ground, is to get service consistency.

I take SMRT service 188 to work in the morning, and although the frequency is stated to be about 15 minutes during the morning peak, I often have to wait for 30 minutes or more. Stating that the frequency gets increased to once every 10 minutes means nothing, unless it is done in practice. Theory and practice are two very different things.

Unless service consistency really improves, I doubt that we will see many people give up their cars for buses and the MRT.
