let's just have a moment of silence for debbie gibson's "electric youth" video.
that is an epic fucking video, perfectly distilling elements of '80s videography while, at the same time, predicting the key elements of early '90s pop videos.
80s-
literal visual interpretation of song lyrics- ex.) "the future only (blah blah) in the hands of itself, and the future is...electric youth!" and you see a "fortune teller" waving hands over a crystal ball that first flashes debbie gibson's face, and right as the future is revealed as "electric youth" in the song, the "electric youth" album title logo appears in the crystal ball.
"isn't technology cool??!" cutaway graphics- ex.) in one, and only one scene, the image of debbie gibson and her tapestry-vest-wearing dancing posse "breaks" as glass would break, and reveals the next scene of tapestry-vest dancing, shot from a different angle.
way way WAY too many "ideas/concepts" in one 3-minute video- ex.) human-interest story (see below), multiple angles of vest-possee dancing, strobe lights, crystal ball scene (see above), a shot of old men in a forest performing the "electric youth" dance, more strobe light, faux concert performance, white screen with a shadow outline of Debbie dancing while wearing palazzo pants, PLEASE JUST PICK ONE. (side note: some of Debbie's other videos also embrace this "brainstorm" concept.)
'90s-
a clothing-coordinated dancing posse behind singer (see vest notes above)
whatever it's called when you have a scene that is black&white except for a few bursts of neon (often blue) color, usually found in the jeans of vests of video participants, most tastefully executed in Boys II Men's graduation anthem, "it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday." also i think Mary J. held it down pretty well in the "real love" video.
some "human-interest story-telling" bs, ex.) showing a 5-year-old version of Debbie playing the piano, then pubescent Debbie playing the piano, and then current Debbie all vested-out and dancing with a possee (too bad they didn't try "future Debbie," wearing an orange tie-dyed baby-tee and stagediving at a Circle Jerks concert.) what the fuck is this, a Soul Asylum or Pearl Jam video? the "child" shots are very traditional and "real," exploding into the "she's-arrived" 1989 present tense of neon and vests, which falsely deluded many "real" kids such as myself that if you tinkle a piano and wear a black hat and tapestry vest and can make it through puberty, your future would welcome you with a soundstage and a dancing posse.
p.s., i am three degrees of separation away from debbie gibson. if you know me, then you are four degrees away. i know you are excited.
