Day 2: Night an_alpha_wolf August 25 2012, 02:59:56 UTC
The night that followed was much less restful as the oldest, youngest and sickest citizens of dome six were evacuated to other domes. To Glory was pressed into service, meaning the Wolves lost half their mobility. They could no longer leapfrog from dome to dome, ahead of the trains.

With their advance reluctantly halted, the Wolves helped the locals instead (some few of them having to be chewed out for refusing to use their mechs or armor in "common labor"). It looked like another night of little sleep.

From his Timber Wolf's cockpit, he looked down at the person making 'keep going' gestures below, placed the I-beam in the proper place.

"I suppose it cannot be helped...Winter is coming."

There was another hand behind steadying her, and it was Ranna's.

She nodded at the two man, then at Adette. "You can lay down and speak at the same time, quiaff?" A gesture of the head at Resnick, before Ranna turned and walked away, towards some civilians.

With the impromptu shelter finished, Resnick dropped the mech to its knees and went over the lip of the mech's cockpit. He dropped to the ground.

And then he saw the state Adette was in and he immediately regretted not asking after her earlier, pride or no.

Where was she going? He had always prided himself on not being the kind of person who needed his CO to babysit him here, but at that moment he wanted her to stay, to keep an official wedge between them. Ranna was objective here. She knew both sides of this equation, coming from a Clan background but knowing how the freeborn did things. He never thought it'd be something he found important but now it was so huge and looming (moreso than the campaign which was looking like a foregone conclusion at this moment) he wanted to avoid it immediately. But he couldn't leave her to faint here in the middle of the street. He nodded at Keijinana as he approached.

"Adette...you should to take the night off. Someone else will take this shift."

Ranna stops to catch Adette, and smiles.

"You have nothing to be sorry for, quiaff? I think many thanks are in order for you, in fact."

She is likely stronger than she looks, thanks to the eugenics program, and is aiding Adette keep upright with minimal effort.

Resnick, swaying a bit himself, took her by the other arm, stooping to loop it over his shoulder.

The medical area was large and open air, filled with mostly younger people nursing injuries. The elderly and the critical cases had already been evacuated on To Glory to the other domes. Space heaters, powered by a mech's fusion engine, provided uneven but welcome warmth, trapping it under the tarp he'd just spread over the top. Which was good, as the blizzard was coming their way, swirling flakes around the edge of the area.

"Aff, we owe you a debt." Pride or no, honesty came first. "Are you hurt anywhere, sib...trothkin?"

Ranna blinked, then patted Adette's arm as they moved. "I will hold you to that."

After they had Adette sit down, she began to do what she had done before on the White Chalice, though this time it was more serious. She tried to remain as inconspicious as possible as she worked, attempting to give the two chance to speak. She did not know how this will play out, but it is best to get things out in the clear rather than to let them fester, good ending or not.

Poor Ranna, having to play nursemaid to two emotionally clumsy people. Resnick sat down next to her. Last night seemed like a long time ago, as if it had happened to someone else. She looked strangely vulnerable in an elemental sized coat, a stark contrast to the screaming huntress she'd been a few hours ago.

As for Ranna, he was grateful that she wasn't chewing them both out at that moment.

There was one question he had to know first: "That was Jin Yasuba, quiaff?"

Ranna looked up with a raised eyebrow.

"You deserved to be killed for...?"

Despite his pride (he'd shook it for the moment), he didn't mind her touch curling around his arm. He glanced to her, looking for an implied assent.

"Jin Yasuba was her former...BoyFriend. One of the Railway's top mechwarriors and her former CO. When she left them she had to fight him. And..."

He didn't know how to articulate the rest, except in the most technical words. They weren't adequate for the situation.

"That was the mech...overman, on the top of the dome."

She might know better what to say, he though, not because they were both women (it wasn't a distinction he recognized) but because they both knew this kindof relationship.

"Perhaps he is a person who has find out how to compartmentalise well, quiaff? Now that you are his enemy, when in mechs, you became one of many."

She continues to administer treatment. "Or, at that distance, it may be hard to attempt a non-killing shot. He simply fired at you." Ranna is tired, but not quite enough to show it, and her mind is still thinking of the many possibilities.

"Neg, it does not seem like there is any need to amputate," she smiles a little. Then returns to her work. No amputation may be needed, but still wounds to be treated.
