History:
Sean has had problems with his right foot for over a year. He has been to a number of emergency rooms and a number of doctors, each of whom gave him a different answer on the problem. First, it was gout. Then, tendonitis. Then, a stress fracture. That was the latest one, and was given by the only doctor so far who seemed to really pay attention to things. Problem is, he was never able to figure out how Sean got the fracture, as there was no trauma to the foot. But anyway, it healed, and that was 3 months ago.
Recent:
Saturday Sean sat up out of a sound sleep and demanded to have his foot sawn off and replaced with a robot foot. It was swollen and very painful, would not bear any weight, and proceeded to get worse. Not to mention that his left ankle was sore from overcompensating. Good thing we happen to own a wheelchair. SUnday we went to the emergency room. They take an xray and an ultrasound, and determine its not broken and no blood clot, well, must be gout! We try to explain that the doctor had told Sean that he had not, in fact, had gout, but they insist, give us a prescription for friggin naproxen (alleve) and shove us out the door. I take Sean home, he proceeds to spike a fever and is unable to sleep due to pain, even through the painkillers. I page his doctor frantically this morning, he promises to make sure the hospital removes their thumb from their ass, we head back. FINALLY, people take him seriously, and a battery of tests and IV antibiotics ensue. Sean is able to sleep at last.
Upshot:
They are still doing tests, some will not happen until tomorrow. The thought right now is that he has an infection in his foot, but it is unknown now whether it is in the bone or the flesh. However, both are treatable and more to the point, they will test him until they figure out exactly what is wrong. Apparently he's a mystery!
And now? I get some sleep.
