Having enjoyed The Magicians and The Magician King, I decided to give Lev Grossman's earlier novel, Codex, a try. It starts off a little odd and I was reluctant to read. Then on page 30, a character is playing Adventure, from the Atari 2600.

Never owned it, but played a friend's copy, and loved it. My interest in Codex has increased considerably.

In the various things I've been doing that didn't include updating this LJ, I've been reading a lot. And despite coming away from Borders' closing with around a dozen books (including Smallville, despite never having watched the show and being doubtful I'll ever actually use it, it was staring at me on every visit, and at 80% off, that fell into my ( Read more... )

Saw this on my last trip to the library, and Jim Butcher's name on the cover was enough to get me to pick it up. I'm not sure if it's a direct novelization of a Spider-Man storyline, or just inspired by one. In it, Spidey has to deal with three "Ancients", beings of great power who feed on totemic figures. I first became aware of the existence of Mouse Guard from some threads on RPG.net, when the RPG was released. I gave them a cursory glance, but didn't spend a lot of time on them. In about 7 hours, my parents will be here to pick me up for the 14 hour drive (split over two days) to my brother and sister-in-law's place near St. Louis. My younger brother will be flying in Wednesday or Thursday. My first Thanksgiving with my family in four years.

It's always a joy when one of my interlibrary loans comes in. I get to open all the ILL packages, so it's like a present when I open one and find something I ordered for myself. Today's latest is Hobby Games: The 100 Best, from Green Ronin.

Browsing my library's shelves for new books, I came across Juliet Barker's Agincourt.  Having something of an interest in the Hundred Year's War and Henry V, I picked it up.  I'll get a chance to read it later this weekend, after the there and back again of tomorrow.
