Author: sigrundora

Prompt: 42. The Accidental Fiance

Oops…they got engaged!

And they weren't even dating! At least, not romantically speaking. Brianna Tully had disqualified herself from the dating game, but she still needed a pretend date to throw off her meddling family. Grant Addison was happy to help a friend, even if it meant pretending to be her fiancé to satisfy her relatives.

Little did Brianna know that her counterfeit fiancé had a motive of his own-to become a husband. And funny thing, Grant had secretly set his sights on his pretend bride-to-be becoming his real-life wife!

Summary Jared receives an invitation from his mom to a party. He knows his mom is itching to matchmake, so he tries to ruin her plan, with unexpected results.

Holy fuck. This was bad. Real bad. Like end of the world bad. What the fuck was he supposed to do?

Jared Padalecki stared down at the card he received in the mail. And what was up with that, who sent cards anymore unless they were wedding or graduation invitations? It figured that it would be his mom who did such things. Sherri Padalecki always liked to have something concrete to hold on to.

Dear Jared.
Please come to our barbeque festival this summer. It’s being held at the football field of the high school
this year and so many families are going to be there. The Johnsons are bringing their 4 grown-up kids,
2 boys and 2 girls, and the Petersons are even inviting their cousins, 3 boys and 2 girls. You just have to come.
Jeff and Megan are both coming. It would be horrible if all my kids weren’t there.
Love, Mom

This was disastrous. The mentioning of all these “kids” could only mean one thing: matchmaking. Fucking matchmaking on his mother’s behalf. She probably had promised these people that he would be there and that he was single and ripe for the picking. He had to hand it to her that she had mentioned more men than women - at least she was OK with that. But apparently she wasn’t OK with him being single. Of course he wasn’t OK with that himself, but needs must and all that and there wasn’t really anyone he had met that fit the space he imagined was empty next to him.

Jensen!

He’d call Jensen and everything would work out fine. Jensen had the answer to everything. Jensen was his best friend who had proved to be a real asset when it came to helping Jared making decisions and finding out the best course of action by being an excellent sounding board. He would definitely have the answer or point Jared in the right direction.

---

“What am I supposed to do, Jensen” Jared almost whined.

“Tell her you’re seeing someone” Jensen replied.

“But she won’t believe it if I said I just met someone, and I would still be fair game to her matchmaking” Jared was pouting, something that Jensen could never resist.

“Well then, bring someone with you” Jensen had no idea how Jared would react to this, he knew that Sherri wouldn’t be so obvious in her matchmaking if someone was staring her right in the face, but he knew that Jared had given up on dating after the disaster with Patrick.

“I can’t just show up with some guy off the street, she’d never believe it. So it would have to be someone who I’ve already mentioned. But who?” Jared literally scratched his head trying to figure things out.

“Who do you know that might be OK with going with you to your home town, meet your family and all the neighbors and pretend you’re dating?” Jensen stared hard at his friend. Would he or wouldn’t he figure things out?

“I can’t bring Christian, he’s travelling, besides mom has often cheered him on in his pining for Danni. Mike and Tom are out of the question as they’re too much in love with each other. And mom would kill me if I brought Chad. Misha is too weird - it would be semi-OK if he was eccentric, but he’s just plain weird. And Jason is married” Jared had been counting on his fingers as he mentioned each name.

“That’s all?” Jensen asked.

“Well, there’s you. But this too crazy even for you to agree to” Jared actually blushed when he said it. Jensen marveled at that fact.

“I’d do it. For you and your mom. Sherri is too nice for you to bring Chad or Misha” Jensen made sure he put an extra air of despair into his words, since Jared hadn’t figured things out after all.

“You’re sure? You’d do that for me? Oh god, thank you so much!” Jared launched himself at his friend and almost suffocated Jensen with one of his hugs, “how do we tell her? Don’t you think she’ll think it crazy that I just suddenly show up with you saying we’re boyfriends and nothing more?” he started to panic.

“We could tell her we’re engaged” Jensen suggested.

“Engaged? Don’t you think she’d find that even stranger?”

“Not if we tell her that we got engaged the night before we fly out and wanted to tell them in person” Jensen had it all figured out, even though he hadn’t told Jared anything.

“But I’ve never mentioned you being more than a friend?” Jared was surprised at how easy all this fake planning had come to Jensen’s mind.

“Well, we’ve been friends for a long time and your mom always sends me cookies for Christmas. And even though she’s met Christian, I’m the only one who’s ben to visit them. We can say that it has been building up over a long time, but we were afraid that this would end badly so we didn’t do much about it. But after the disaster with Patrick, we realized that this was it, and maybe the reason for all those failed relationships between us. And so, we decided to do something about it” Jensen took a deep breath after all this.

“Jensen, you’re a genius!” Jared exclaimed as he hugged his friend again as fast as he could, “you’re the most awesome person I know and I knew that you would help me find a way out of the matchmaking”.

---

“Oh, Jensen, I’m so happy that he finally saw what was right in front of his eyes,” Sherri Padalecki said as she hugged him. Jensen didn’t mind as Padalecki hugs were the best he had ever experienced. They hugged with their whole body, and not just barely encircling one’s arms around the other person. It was totally like coming home, to be the recipient of a Padalecki hug.

Jensen must have shown some of his frustration in his body language because she hugged him even harder.

“He doesn’t know, does he?” she asked.

Jensen shook his head.

“Oh, you poor boy. I know he feels the same, he just hasn’t realized it yet. Well, we’ll just have to make him realize it,” she said with a determination in her voice. She led Jensen over to a picnic table where one of the Peterson cousins was sitting.

“Mitch, this is Jensen. You two have a lot in common,” she said as she almost thrust Jensen at the man, “you should get acquainted” she said as she turned around to try and find Jared. Jensen and Mitch had to lean close to be able to hear each other as the table was situated close to the speakers.

When Sherri found Jared she pulled him aside and pointed Jensen and Mitch out to him.

“Look at those two, they sure do look cozy together” she said with a twinkle in her eye that Jared missed entirely, “did you know that Mitch broke up with his boyfriend two weeks ago? Maybe Jensen can help him recover like he helped you after Patrick”.

Jared looked over to them. They looked good together, Mitch being the perfect dark foil for Jensen’s lighter complexion. And when he saw Jensen take Mitch’ hand to look at something, Jared felt his heart miss a beat.

How could he have been so stupid? Everything that Jensen said back in his apartment was true. Their non-relationship had ruined all other relationships that Jared had tried to have. He always compared the guy to Jensen unconsciously and they always came up wanting. That’s why nothing worked out and why he felt happiest when he and Jensen were just hanging out.

He loved Jensen.

And maybe Jensen loved Jared too, if what he had said was true about Jared, then maybe it was true about Jensen as well. There was only one way to find out.

Jared stalked over to the picnic table and grabbed Jensen’s hand.

“Sorry, but I need to speak to my fiancé” he told Mitch as he dragged Jensen away.

Jensen shrugged apologetically at Mitch as he was led away. They shared a look that was hopeful on both ends.

Jared stopped when they had reached an appropriate distance from the crowd and turned to Jensen.

“I’m a fool” he said, “such a stupid fool who doesn’t deserve you at all. But when I saw you take his hand, I got so insanely jealous that I could have ripped that hand off his body. Everything you said back at your place is true. There’s only been you since I met you. I didn’t know it or understand it then, but it is glaringly obvious now. I love you,”

Jensen smiled. Finally Jared had caught on and they were on the same page.

“I don’t want this to be pretend only,” he said as he pointed to the rings on their fingers. The rings they had picked out together because when it came to lying to his mom, Jared was very method and took things seriously. “I want it to be forever.”

“Me too” Jared said as he tilted his head and met Jensen halfway.

Some distance away, Sherri smiled and sighed. Her plan had ended just as she had wanted.
