I'm not a huge fan of birthdays. It's not that I don't like what they mean (another year older), it's just that it's just a day for me. Growing up, my family didn't have no-holds-barred, gigantic parties for our birthdays, even when we were younger (although we did have the extended family over, but it would be pretty subdued). When my sister and I got older, we celebrated by eating out at a restaurant, something we didn't do too often, and the birthday boy/girl would get to pick the place. We also weren't snowed under with presents when we were older; most likely one big gift.
My brother-in-law, however, likes having a Month of George, where there are tons of different celebrations and dinners. His and Mike's parents are divorced and remarried, so the large extended family lends itself to countless parties. My best friend Katie always throws a great bar party every year, and for Mike, well, we have a children's birthday party for him (eventually he'll grow out of it =P).
But for me, I shy away from parties. I'd rather just go out to dinner at a place of my choosing, and not even get a gift. I'd rather let it pass unnoticed--in fact, the people I work with don't know my birth date so that I can avoid it.
But today's Mike's birthday, so I will happily hire a marching band and an inflatable moonwalk and circus-folk and get a giant cake and celebrate with him. Happy 25th Mike! And watch out for what John Mayer called, your "quarter-life crisis".
