Piper is 17!

Piper turned 17 yesterday, and we celebrated the way we often celebrate summer birthdays, which is "by driving somewhere." We were in Minnesota for Nora's high school graduation party on Saturday, and then on Monday the 10th we headed home. Our first stop was Minnesota's Largest Candy Store, which is indeed, really big. They only take cash, and we managed to spend just $.22 short of all the cash we brought with us.

Then we drove for a long time.

Of course, dinner was Noodles and Company, Piper's favorite. They have updated their mac and cheese to include more cheese; an idea Piper says they stole from her, because she always used to ask for a side of cheese. We also played a couple of games of Clue.

We gave her gifts of a fondue pot, souvenir drum sticks from the Surf Ballroom, drum charts for popular hits, an organizer for her sheet music, and an adult butterfly coloring book. Her sisters gave her "car stuff"--a cd of a band she likes, Jesse and Joy, and car scissors. (They really are quite useful.)

Piper just finished up her junior year of high school; she got As in every class, and really enjoyed learning things in her Biology class. She interested in perhaps a Biology major in college.

She is also enjoying learning the piano, which she took up just over a year ago. She will often sit down and just play, with no prompting or reminders to practice. She's learning about music theory from her teacher as well.

She's a funny kid, well-liked by her friends, who seems to get along with almost everyone. Very few things anger her, but she does have particular disdain for the word "She-ro," because "hero" already exists.

This summer we're going to indulge even more of her love of candy with a road trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania, with stops along the way at various candy factories and stores.

I look forward to seeing what happens with her next!
