Colleges and lighting

So, I have two major topics for this entry, and I'm going to do the one that occurred to me second first, because that's what you all care about.

Next year, I will be attending.......

*drumroll*

Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. I sent them my acceptance letter today.

Ok, now onto the second part. I have no idea how many of you will understand what I'm talking about, or care if you do. If you do (understand or care), please comment.

I had a really cool lighting moment today. I decided to try, based on a light plot that a U of M student did for a 1990 production of the musical "Swing, Swing, Swing," and that I happened to have in my possession, using a scoop in a Front of House position for a color wash. I have to admit I was very skeptical, even though I'd looked up the beam angle of the scoop and used my protractor on the sectional drawing to determine that it would theoretically work. I took two scoops and hung them on our Front of House batten, rough focused them, and came down and turned one of them on. It was actually quite beautiful, in an elegant and simple way. It washed the entire stage with a very nice, soothing, soft, blue light (I had R64 in the scoop at the time), and I just sat there looking at it, and marveling at its beauty.

Now I understand why professional lighting designers say that ideally, they'd be able to light the stage with just a single instrument.

I love what I do.
