got an ace hand

So today, skipping around the Internet as you do, I came across this blog, Love From the Asexual Underground and it got me thinking about asexuality and fictional characters. I guess before I start babbling about this, I should add that, uh, I do not have a lot of information on asexuality. I have the basic idea down: there are people who are not ( Read more... )

I'm sorry, but Zell was checking that girl out entirely on his own initiative. And LOL about him stammering and flailing around when asked what kinds of girls he likes ( ... )

I don't know what you're talking about, clearly he was just watching her go by out of curiosity. I'm kind of torn, honestly, because I do think that Zell has some appreciation for, uh, chicks. But compared to other dudes, I'd have to say he's not that much of a horndog.

Also, if I get lung cancer when I'm 60, it's because I just had a ten minute conversation with our neighbor downstairs as he smoked. Ugh, I can smell it on my clothes.

ANYWAY. You make a really good point about the topic coming about vs not (haha, coming up, get it? ERECTIONS, is what I'm saying)! Which I guess is kind of Seifer in-game, he doesn't really get a chance to say yay or nay. WE DO NOT KNOW.

I feel like there are some random girls who gossip about relationships, but I could be wrong. AND DON'T FORGET ALL THE TREPIES. Maybe the Garden rule about promiscuity is for their benefit alone. And for that one time that one of the students accidentally caught Cid and Edea making out in the library study room.

Afaik, Sherlock Holmes is generally read as asexual? I am not into Sherlock fandom but I recall there being some outrage at ...something that made him have a vague interest in sex (maybe) because of it. I AM NOT SURE AND MAY BE STICKING MY FOOT IN MY MOUTH HERE.

Though now you've made me want to go through and like, catalogue the sexualities of all my characters. Damn you. (It doesn't take much for me to be like "I SHOULD MAKE LISTS" though, so uh, yeah. >____>)

That's true! I've even had a conversation with my dad about it. And your foot is safely outside of your mouth, the latest Sherlock Holmes movies (typed that as "SH" movies and couldn't not read Silent Hill) with Robert Downey Jr. basically gave him chemistry with EVERYBODY. Because he's RDJ. He's, uh, the only version of Sherlock I've seen that reads as sexual.

Then again, those movies were kind of weird anyway. They belong in a special "Sherlock Holmes" subset in my brain.

DO IT, L, MAKE A LIST. I have already identified at least one of my characters as ace-leaning, and then there's another one who used to be in love with someone he really didn't want to sleep with, so. Liiiisssts. They're calling to you. XD

Haaaa I can't not read SH as Silent Hill either. Occasionally writerly people will use it to mean Strange Horizons (professional-rate spec mag) and I will be like "YES I COULD SEND THAT STORY TO SILENT HILL LAWL--wait". In my head. Usually.

Oh, I know I have a couple of ace characters in my head. It's more just the act of writing everything down into a shiny list. :D ...maybe I will do that on DW instead of like, being productive~

EDITED TO ADD: IF I MAKE A LIST YOU SHOULD ALSO MAKE A LIST. O__O

Hahaha, I am now picturing Pyramid Head as the editor of the Silent Hill magazine. Oddly adorable, possibly because I am picturing him with glasses. I DON'T KNOW HOW THIS WORKS, HE DOESN'T HAVE EARS

Pfft, productivity is for people who don't have better things to do.

I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH CHARACTERS FOR A LIST

BUT LET'S DO THIS ANYWAY *SOLEMN HIGH FIVE*

Heh. I kinda do the asexual-until-proven-sexual (and-sometimes-even-then-because-canon-is-WRONG) thing too, though in my case... for the most part, I find asexuality the unmarked state, and sexuality the marked one.

I suspect this is only because I'm pretty firmly asexual, and sex is not something I consider in my day-to-day musings on life, the characters, or anything.

For whatever reason, I read Squall as ace, Seifer, Zell, Rinoa and Selphie as eh-whatever-probably-sexual-'cause-everyone-frickin'-is, Irvine as obnoxiously sexual in that highschool winkwinknudgenudge way, and Quistis as romantic grey-bi. But I'm pretty sure none of it ever came up in anything I ever did with any of them.

And then I get the weird characters of my own. Like Khor, who's entirely asexual but extremely into kink, especially bloodplay. And Dmitri, who's bisexual but functionally asexual, because if she has the time to be doing anything and is faced with the choice between sex and doing some late-night investigative journalism, the journalism will ( ... )

I'm pretty sure I'm alone in my ideas about Zell. To be fair, I do think he, you know, could really get to like sex a lot once he figures out how it works, but I always liked him kind of flailing and not being to sure what exactly is supposed to happen.

OBLIVIOUS. That's the word!

Oddly, I can identify with kink just as well on an asexual basis as I can with a sexual mindset. There's still a release going on, there. And I'm glad you used the phrase "functionally asexual," it was a description that I was struggling to find. Also I like your version of Sam Carter. I have no idea if it's because I was introduced to SG-1 through you, but she never really struck me as being that interested in sex. :D

I would be really impressed if you had managed to come up with a way for Jack Harkness to be asexual, because seriously. Dude. That torpedo was not checking you out, please stop straddling it. (I <3 Jack Harkness.)

I have seen Jack written as a sex-having asexual before.

And Zell is oblivious to an awful lot.

One of the reasons I like SG-1 is that sex was never a big deal. Romance either. It will crop up now and again on the periphery, but it's not like, say, Bones, where half of every episode is dedicated to who's in love with who. It's dealt with like pretty much any other aspect of life: it happens, and it has effects, and it's not some single most important pillar of human existence. Other things are going on which are much more important. Like saving the galaxy.

Hello! I have indeed seen you around, and I'm glad I actually had an interesting post for you to read instead of my usual dumb crap. :D I wish I still had my icon of Zell awkwardly sticking his hand out in greeting, but alas, I'm back to the basic 6 icons.

It's awesome to know that there are other people that also assume characters are more asexual until canon says otherwise. I think I'm pretty alone in my opinion of Zell, although in an above comment, I realized that what I was really trying to say is that Zell is oblivious to sexual overtones in my mind. Which does not equal asexual, although is still kind of unusual for a teenage dude. I think? Anyway, I can definitely see the not asexual side of things for Zell, too. And, um, am a huge Seifer/Zell fan, if that tells you anything.

I would love to hear your thoughts! I may ask you to explain odd asexual lingo, since I'm pretty new to this whole thing, but really, 90% of the reason I posted this was to get other people's ideas, so!

I blame thebaconfat for my love of asexual!Biggs/Wedge ( ... )

Man, I am a master of posting dumb crap so, eh, whatever, but YAY AWESOME ENTRY anyway.

huge Seifer/Zell fan who isn't? There is always demisexuality (or perhaps he is just a "grey-A")! And I could totally see Zell as being either of those things rather than fully asexual, though just plain oblivious is also about right, haha. Oh, Zell. XD It does seem pretty weird for any teenager to be so blind to sexual overtones. Part of me wants to pin that in part on the whole "going to a military academy-thing" different mindsets et al, but then of course plenty of other characters have no problems pointing things out. (He does seem to at least understand aesthetic attraction and comes across as pretty clearly not aromantic, even if he doesn't necessarily know much beyond that, but that is neither here nor there ( ... )

Just going to raise my little "Sephiroth considered mating and courting behaviour utterly beneath him" flag next to yours. Hi. That doesn't mean people wouldn't have made overtures toward him, but he'd never return them sincerely.

Also hey, my icon's keywords are relevant for once!

I have, like, near-to-zero interest in characters' sex lives unless I find the exploration of such interesting in some way, and I think I've actually declared more headcanon asexuality than I have headcanon bi or homosexuality? Which is funny, because some of my favourite characters are the sort with a sexual orientation of "yes" (Jack Harkness, Isabela and Zevran, I am looking at you. But not ogling. Yes, all right, you can ogle if you like). Probably because they're such good comedic devices. (Especially Isabela. Corrupt all innocence! Continue sneaking pornographic books into my bookshelf and drawing dirty pictures in my diary! Be pantsless! Be free! ♥)

Like, one of my rage moments for the movie version of Watchmen was Ozymandias having a gay porn folder. Personally, I don't think Adrian has time or the inclination to find that sort of relationship with anyone - and it would be nearly impossible for him to find anyone he was on equal footing with anyway. I don't know why he'd bother, when there are so many more productive things ( ... )

Haha, best sexual orientation description ever for Jack Harkness. And Zevran. Is Isabela from DA2?

Also, so much agreement with your analysis of Watchmen people. I mean, it was nice that they gave a little nod to the fact that there are gay people in the world, I just wish that... it hadn't been him? I mean, I should say, I sort of feel like Ozymandias really appreciates the male form, but I don't know that it's necessarily sexual to him. ANYWAY.

But I'm also pretty sure Rinoa wouldn't mind once she understands, because it's Squall, and his admitting to any connection at ALL is a big step.Aww, this is so true ( ... )

Isabela is in DA as well (in the infamous threesome/foursome sequence), but she's only a proper character in the sequel when she joins your party and looks like this. You will note: no pants. Anyway, she's a pirate captain (or, well, as much of one as she can be with her ship sunk) and a lady who believes in pleasure wherever you find it. In fact she's a lot like Zevran, which is fortunate, because they met when he assassinated her husband (to her relief) and they get along very well. Yes, in that way, but also generally. She will try diligently to corrupt the more sexually inexperienced members of your party, hit on you and everyone else shamelessly, turn just about everything into a double entendre, and is probably the easiest of all the romantic interests to get into bed. (However, if you don't romance anyone else, she has a more subtle, sweet romance arc that's about her accepting that it's all right to love somebody and find emotional intimacy, rather than physical. Otherwise she'll be quite okay with you moving on ( ... )

Ohhhh, I thought her name sounded familiar! I have actually made it to that encounter in DA! It was pretty awesome, although I am still annoyed at Zevran for being passive aggressive re: threesomes instead of foursomes. I'M SORRY, ZEVRAN, I JUST WANT SOME SEXY LADY TIME, OKAY? I'll make it up to you later, I swear. Also, hee! I had no idea that she was a playable character in DA2.

Haha, the dialogue between non-main characters was one of the things I loved a lot about DA, and I am happy to see that it is still awesome in the sequel. I love that Isabela keeps encouraging Aveline to swear and be a total ass, so great. <3

A crossover with those three would basically be them managing to save the world while shagging. Somehow. I kind of shudder to think about how many innuendos there would be. They'd have competitions to see who could talk in double entendres the longest ( ... )
