This ficlet was part of The Great Ficlet Project, in which 26 different fandoms were represented, each with a ficlet based on a song lyric provided by my friends list.

Title: The Midnight Train Going Anywhere
(Journey lyric, provided by control_freak80)
Genre: Gen
Pairing/Characters: Ronon
Length: 269 words
AU: (Shermer_High)

Another year, another foster home. Ronon looks out the window at his new town and feels nothing but nothing. They’ve decided to get him out of the city this time. As if there aren’t gangs out here in the suburbs, as if there aren’t Wraith for him to fight.

He’s stopped promising the social worker that he won’t go after them. She’s a nice lady, and he’s tired of lying to her. So when she asks him, he sits silently and stares at his hands. He thinks about his father’s hands, remembers his dad’s long fingers strumming out an old Marley tune on a beat-up guitar. Two days after his father testified against the gang members who had robbed their family business, the Wraith burned his music store to the ground. Ronon’s father, mother, and little brother were trapped in the second floor apartment over the store. He lost everyone that mattered to him, and now a desire for revenge is all he has.

Distantly, he hears the social worker; she’s telling him this is his last chance. It’s Shermer Oaks or juvenile detention. “You’re a smart boy, Ronon. You could do great things. Please,” she says, and he thinks she’s really begging him. “Please, give this place a chance. Give yourself a chance here.”

“I will,” he tells her, because he’s made up his mind - this is his last foster home. He’s tall enough now to buy a train ticket without getting the third degree. He could go anywhere, it doesn’t matter, but he thinks maybe he’ll choose somewhere warm. If things go south here, so will he.
