Please Save My Enthusiasm
So I've started reading the Please Save My Earth manga after finishing the OVA today, pushed by a fanficrants rant. The first four volumes - woah, amazing. Beautifull and intense, but-
-the author just had to ruin it with volumes 5 and 6.
That backstory is so incredibly dull. Because the characters are dull, but that was ok when it was combined with the pathos of dealing with reincarnation and all the awesome of the previous volumes. Now it's just a bad soap opera shoujo about a generic lead, his generic love rivals and Yamato Fucking Nadeshiko. I've just reached the chapter with Rape Is Love and I'm just about ready to bail. Hiwatari Saki, you were so good at writing characters realistically - did you HAVE to draw two volumes about Mary Sue x Marty Stu that combines the most cliched lines and scenarios possible? Leaving the past a vague mystery would have been perfect for this manga.
I hope you'll finish this arc quickly and return to the INTERESTING relationships - namely Ms Generic / shota, Enju/Love Rival #1 and Love Rival #2 / Shotacon guy. I really don't care about Shion's huge cat, honestly, or about the nun's he used to live then, or anything he did back when he was still Mr Generic Shoujo Lead. Rin is interesting because Shion went insane, not because of his extremely easily guessable past from all the narration you already did in volumes 1-4.
In fact, the backstory managed to make Rin himself almost dull - in a whiny 'I want to be loved and a homeeeee *sniff*' way. I have no idea how you managed that, or how you intent to pull out of it.

Also, YOU RAPED HER. I DON'T CARE THAT YOU WERE DEPRIVED OF LOVE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE, YOU RAPED HER, YOU SCUMBAG. I FELT SORRY FOR YOU WHEN THE 9YEAR THING WAS REVEALED, BUT FUCK, I'M ALMOST GLAD SHUKAIDO DID WHAT HE DID. YOU DESERVED IT.
WHAT YOU CERTAINLY DIDN'T DESERVE IS TWO VOLUMES OF WANGST WANGST WANGST.

Son of Edit: Ok, it gets good again in volume 9. What was up with 5-8? Was the author in mid-life crisis or something? They's back to entwining past and past present with pretty pictures, what the manga is good at - and setting the relationships and reactions back straight. Huh.
Grandson of Edit: Wait, that was too fast said. Now they went through a couple hundred pages to describe Yamato Nadeshiko's more-interesting-than-male-leads-but-still-dull backstory *groans*
Too Many Edits: Finished. It left a bitter taste in my mouth. Well, doing a Rin/Shion duality was nice, but pairing Enjun with Sakura? And having shotacon have two kids with his wife? Seriously? After all the build-up and drama you we were served? Why, because it would be 'perverted' and 'unnatural'? (<- actual quotes from the manga).
In short, huge disappointment. But I guess the sparkling OVA and first few volumes built my expectations too high.
