Edward came into her classroom, rather subdued and with both hands on his bag strap. The automail was back and working fine it seemed and he shuffled in uncertain and nervous about this meeting. It wasn't something he wanted to do. He was far more guarded then their last meeting and there was nothing but turmoil in his eyes. He felt like he was swaying back and forth between strong emotions, confusion colouring his perception of just what was going on and everything he'd pushed down was on the surface once more.
He set his bag down on a desk and faced Rangiku, keeping his arms crossed a bit, a feint of attitude and a way to keep his wand close, simply out of irrational fear. Rationally he understood. Irrationally he did not. "Professor." Edward said softly. "You wanted to see me."
"I'm glad you made it," the Charms professor greeted Ed, his arrival snapping her out of the trance. "How are you feeling?" She stood, taking a couple of steps towards him and smiling kindly. Really it seemed like a stupid question, but it had to be asked. He looked a wreck, anyone could see that, but Rangiku needed to know what words he'd give her.
She leaned against her desk, hands loosely clasped at her lap.
"I'm alright. Really. I overreacted." Edward said simply. He wouldn't give her anything it seemed. He shifted his right shoulder a few times, it was twinging a bit from the reconnection that morning, but that would pass. That probably hadn't helped matters too much really. He didn't break his stance and he didn't relax. He'd been thinking about it all day really, he suddenly had been unable to help it, it was like Christmas break all over again.
Rangiku sighed softly. "You didn't overreact," she started, keeping her place against the desk. For she might want to comfort him, and hug him, that might not be the best thing to do right now. The usual steamrolling wasn't the way to go. Maybe it'd be better to just give him a way to relax and see how things went. Getting to explode things might help him relax a little, or at least vent.
"We don't have to talk," Rangiku finally continued, "but I think I still know something that'll help. With you studies," she added, strangely emphasized although really it was completely untrue. "Ready, Ed?"
"With my studies." Edward repeated and relaxed a bit, rather visibly. He uncrossed his arms and drew his wand with his left hand, grasping it tightly. "Alright Professor. What spell are we working on?"
He stepped a bit closer to the dummy, presuming that was going to be his target.
She raised her own wand and flicked it at the dummy, jerking to forward so it was no longer leaning against the wall. It hovered a couple of inches up in the air, making it a little taller than Ran herself. "It's pretty simple," the blonde explained. "Your control is good. Very good, actually," she praised, before continuing. "This is just to work on the power. Blasting Spell... You probably know it, right?"
Raising her wand, she aimed it at the dummy. "Confringo." The target flew back, smacking into the wall, before returning to it's former position. "I can get more dummies," she elaborated. "When you start off with the Blasting it'll be like that, and then it'll get more powerful. Don't worry about holding back -- that's why I'm here, ne?"
She had already cast a spell to absorb any spells that tries to go outside the area that contained herself, Ed and the dummy. Anybody else who came in would be safe, and Ran was there to make sure Ed didn't get hurt. There was no way she would be letting this go wrong.
The idea of smashing something through work was quite appealing to Ed. He wasn't normally that big on spellcasting, but he'd give something like this a shot. Edward took his stance and raised his wand. "Confringo!"
The dummy did fly back into the wall and return to its former place, but not as quickly as Rangiku's attempt. Edward was exercising some of that control, he could be, if he tried, very powerful, but he was more worried about his movements still beyond anything else and doing it the way Rangiku had taught him initially was just as challenging as with other spells. He paused to think about how to fix it.
"Good start." She watched him carefully. Ed still looked like he was approaching this too... rigidly, thinking about it like a precise potion or somethig. "Try not to think too much, remember? Over thinking makes it harder." And you're over thinking with a lot of things, Ed. Rangiku demonstrated again, simplifying the motion. "Let yourself go with it."
Never mind that she tried to keep things contained herself. "Sometimes tapping into emotions can help," she murmured. "Passion is what keeps us going."
Thinking and rationalizing is just what Ed did however, and he practiced the hand motion a few times before attempting to cast it again. He didn't heed her advice to tap into his emotions and the dummy barely moved. Edward's eyes narrowed and he cast at it again. He was over thinking, distracted and then getting frustrated with the entire thing, because it wasn't working and Ed's fuse was particularly short already.
At a second failed attempt he huffed and crossed his arms, trying to puzzle through it. "This is stupid. I hate Charms anyway!" He didn't really but at the moment he was taking things out on his only living target.
Rangiku stayed still, not moving away from the desk she leaned against. "It's difficult sometimes," she acknowledged, knowing that Ed was just lashing out. She didn't take it personally. "But that's what asking other people is for. We're all around to help, Ed."
Keeping her gaze trained on him, she rose and gently rested a hand on his shoulder, just for a moment. "You can beat this. Show that dummy who's boss."
Edward wanted to lash out to be sure, but her quiet encouragement was changing his tactics from her to the dummy, which was probably her goal. "Confringo!" He spoke the word sharply, angrily and the dummy flew back with a fair bit of force into the wall. It came back and Ed cast again because he just wanted the thing away from him. This happened four times in a rush of emotion before he was panting softly, giving up a bit on his small burst of anger.
The dummy was taking a battering, but Rangiku watched quietly as Ed fired off the volley of spells. She'd taken Al's words to heart, trying to figure out what might help, but she'd wait with the offer of anything else for a little bit.
"That was good. How are you feeling?" She walked to her desk and picked up a pitcher of water the moogles had bought her earlier. "Thirsty?"
Edward sighed, breathing a little heavily and stood up straight. "Yeah, actually, water would be good."
He stepped forward and followed her to the desk to take the water. He hadn't put his wand away though and he shifted his shoulder again, shrugging it a few times, flexing it.
Water splashed into the glass slowly, avoiding a descent onto the mess of papers that was Rangiku's desk. "Here." She held the glass out to Ed, while pouring another for herself.
Edward shook his head. "No, but I had the reconnection this morning and after the shocks of that, it just tends to ache and hurt the rest of the day. It's not really recommended one's up at all, but I can't sit still usually."
He tilted his head back and began to drink quickly. "They say reconnection is worse than childbirth."
Rangiku couldn't help a smile. "Childbirth?" Her nose wrinkled. "Can't say I'm much for either, myself. At least you don't have to worry about looking after lots of little kids as a result."
Glass at her lips, her brow furrowed as she drank some of the cold water. "Do you have to get--" she waved a hand as she tried to remember the word, "-- reconnections? Do you have to get them often?"
