Ambrosia Sterling, youngest (and only as-yet-unwed) daughter of the Governor of King's Port, sat at the wide picture window of her bedroom, gazing out to the sea that stretched ever outward toward the horizon. Her blue-gray eyes followed the rise and fall of a seagull cresting on the winds that blew inland from the shore, and a slight sigh escaped her lips.

It was only during moments like these, when she was allowed time to herself, that Ambrosia let herself imagine what life would be like outside of the castle, beyond the walls both real and metaphorical, that she was unable to climb. She would never abandon her duty to her family, of course, but she grew weary of constant social engagements, the calls of suitors, none of whom suited her, the fussing done by her sisters over the fact that she wasn't yet married, or even engaged, and the oppressive watch of her father.

Sometimes, very rarely, she found herself wishing she could become a bird and fly away, to escape all this and settle down somewhere quiet and alone.

A voice outside her room snapped Ambrosia out of her reverie, and she stood quickly, smoothing her skirts and adjusting her gloves. Her eyes narrowed. The voice belonged to none other than AJ Tremaine, a man whose reputation alone caused her to clench her fists and take several deep, calming breaths.

"I've no chaperon, sir," she said at last. "It would be inappropriate."

Her voice alone sent shivers down his spine. She said hardly anything, but it was everything. His heart soared. He was a romantic to his core and the very notion of love- no matter how fleeting- lifted his mood impossibly high. He never thought he'd come down. If only he could catch a glimpse of the flaxen beauty. He knew he would be a happy man.

"I care not for such custom, milady. I know in my heart we are meant to be. If not for the rest of our lives, at least in this moment of time. Let me in so I may be graced with your beauty and captivated by the light of your presence."
