All morning long something annoying had thrummed at Jayne's mind. He'd swatted at the loose feelings, but couldn't get rid of it. It was starting to get on his nerves. It was too big to just shrug off, but what the heck was it? He scowled, already hating the day.

He made his way through the Common Room, grumbling to himself. He hardly noticed when he bumped into that prefect person. Still, everything seemed a lot less annoying now. Except for running into her.

"You tell me," he bit out, not really up for thinking too hard that early in the morning.

Lilith, irritated by Jayne's tone, looked up at him coldly, suspiciously, before her expression softened into its usual calm. "I'm not sure." She moved away from him smoothly, although she did not move very far. Already, her mind was working on what was possibly wrong. She did not think the boy, dim as he was, had any concept of a summoning spell -- and she highly doubted that was case anyway.

"Has anything odd happened to you this morning?"

He tried to think of what all had happened this morning. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Aside from that gorram itch that hadn't gone away until she had gotten here. And he wasn't too keen on letting her know that.

"Not that I can tell. You?"

"Nothing at all," Lilith said, without batting an eyelash. "My apologies then, for bumping into you." Her voice by now had shifted to exude artificial warmth and superficial politeness. "It seems I'm clumsy today." She would try to figure out, later, what had caused it in the first place, but for now nothing seemed especially strange. Perhaps it was just the castle preparing for yet another idiotic foray into madness, she thought.

This perception changed almost the moment she began to move away from Jayne. It started first with the burning pain along her limbs, the sensation of prickling along her skin. The further she moved, the worst it became, and she only stopped when the pain became too much to stand, manifesting itself into a sudden, incapacitating headache. She reached up to hold her head and it was to her benefit her back was turned from Jayne now, as her face shifted into an absolutely murderous expression before she thought to adjust it. That filthy, ill-bred oaf had performed some sort of spell on her. "Cobb." She bit out ( ... )

That girl was too nice and polite. Gave him the chills. Or just made him a little paranoid that she was a prefect and he was usually getting into some mess or another. Either way, he was perfectly fine to not stand around and talk to her that morning. He watched her leave, giving her time to get plenty far ahead of him in the hallway before he left for class. Being a little late was better than worrying he might get in trouble.

He frowned when it seemed like fire ants were crawling under his skin. He itched at his arms, but couldn't find anything wrong. He didn't like this. Some idiot was probably using magic on him and he could do nothing but take it. It seemed to get worse and worse until his head was pounding and he could hardly think. "Gorram it, what is going on?" he asked to no one in particular.

Jayne's head jerked up to look at Lilith. She was accusing him of doing something? Oh that was rich. Of course, he wasn't too keen to let her know just how bad he was at magic. "Me?" he asked, "I ain't done nothing. ( ... )

"I don't know," she managed. The pain was agonizing. "Some sort of spell..." She took a deep breath, then another. Focused. Her discomfort, she recalled, had stopped as soon as she gotten near Jayne, and began again when she moved away from him. It seemed then, that her first assumption had been incorrect, and that Cobb was not to blame for this. That only left one other option: the castle's usual oddities.

Lilith, with great effort, straightened up and walked back toward Jayne. The closer she moved, the less pain she felt, until eventually she felt nothing at all. "My apologies, again, for my accusation. It seems you aren't to blame for this."

SO SHINY AND ADDICTING gunsngrenades August 24 2010, 05:10:09 UTC
Jayne was pretty sure his head was going to explode. He didn't understand what was going on. He only knew that he did not like it. If he were better at thinking, he might have come up a solution of some sort. As it was, he stood there for some time willing it to go away.

And miraculously, it did. However, now Lilith was standing too close for comfort. He looked down at her with a sneer. "Then who is?" he asked. Whoever it was, he was going to make them pay.

Without the pain washing over her senses, Lilith could think again, but she felt a swell of irritation at needing to explain what she felt was obvious, a prickling annoyance beneath her skin. "The castle." She took a moment to search for her journal, hidden securely in her bag with her school supplies, and flipped idly through the pages. "It seems that for the time being," she remarked, as she read, "Individuals, such as you and I, are trapped together at random. If we move too far away, as you've noticed....we suffer a great deal of pain."

And so now, came the moment of truth. Rage settled, coiled like a snake in her chest, but her voice remained level. "I'm afraid we have to stay in close proximity to one another, for now."

Jayne didn't like the idea of being stuck with her at all. He frowned and grabbed her journal from her, trying to read the other entries. If she was making this up, he was going to hit her, prefect be damned.

He flipped through the pages, browsing to see if anyone else had this issue. Sure enough, there were several entries of other people with this problem. She obviously hadn't planned for this to happen. He wasn't sure why she would. At least he hoped she hadn't concocted this up. He narrowed his eyes as he looked at her. She didn't look like she was dying to be near him for all eternity.

That problem avoided, the only thing he could think of was, "So, how do we, you know, go to the bathroom and such?"

Lilith started in surprise when he snatched her journal from her, and had to repress the sudden and intense desire to slap him. Had no one taught him manners? "What is wrong with you?" Her voice raised, the first it had throughout this disaster.

She snatched the book back, instead, and for once, she looked annoyed. Angry. Why he would even think she had any reason, let alone desire to be around him for any extended period of time was beyond her -- she had no reason to lie about this. She narrowed her eyes as well, sizing her shoulders, standing upright. If he thought his thuggish intimidation frightened her in any way, he was sorely mistaken ( ... )

Jayne grumbled an agreement to her, his face turned in a mocking sneer. He never appreciated rules much. They never did him any good. Still, he had the strange notion that he would deeply regret trying anything extreme with her.

He didn't know when he could be free of her, so he figured he might as well make the best of it. He stood up straighter and set his shoulders. "Well, since we don't have class today, what do you reckon we should do?" he asked. It would make for a very long day if they did nothing but ignore each other. He didn't think he could handle it without managing to anger her.

She watched him impassively, quietly. So many people let their emotions play on their face, she'd noticed this long ago, as a child. It was evident he didn't respect her -- she could tell from his body language, the grumbling and posturing. If he'd been an ally, she would have told him this, that the most dangerous individuals were the ones who knew how to smile when they were angry, the ones who could make their voices light and calm when a tempest raged beneath. But he was not one to be taught these things, she knew. He would be of little use to her.

And where she could not gain respect, instead she would inspire fear. There would be time enough for that though, later on. For now, she tilted her head. Hummed. Appeared to consider their options.

"I'm not sure. What would you like to do?"

Bahaha, I made you wait longer! FFF where did the last two weeks go? gunsngrenades September 23 2010, 08:26:08 UTC
New as he was to the school, Jayne didn't have much knowledge of it. It was a lot bigger and much more confusing than his old one. He was slowly learning his way around, but he still had a hard time finding his way around. He was loathe to admit that to her. So he opted for the next best thing. "Not be stuck to you," he grumbled.

However, at the last moment he decided to at least be a little charitable. He had only visited a few places before, so he thought maybe they could go out and see one of the other locations. "Well, I guess I'd like to get outdoors. Maybe explore a bit outside. Looks like it's not raining."
