Thomas grew up in the wizarding world, with all its general disdain of muggle life and muggle things. Perhaps even more than most because Lord Raith was very, very outspoken against such things. Which was probably why, when Thomas left home, he went straight for London. One couldn't help but pick up bits and pieces of muggle culture every time they stepped outside the Leaky Cauldron and he'd taken a flat in muggle London proper for just that reason.
Which may have explained the humming coming from the potions office, interspersed with lyrics from a recently popular song. "And I know that we could be so amazing. And being in your life is going to change me. And now I can see every single possibility."
Lucky so-and-so even had a really good singing voice.
