The stairs wouldn't let him see Blue.

See, this was a problem on several levels. One, stairs do not have the right to determine who goes where. If stairs kept people from going places, that defeated the whole purpose of building stairs to get places. This is what separated humans from animals. So, stairs should not be a hindrance. That was the first problem.

The second problem was that Blue was on the other end of the stairs. Silver hadn't seen Blue for a while, now, and so by all rights, seeing Blue was extremely important. Extremely. So not being able to see Blue was a major problem ( ... )

Well that hurt, but thankfully Blue had landed on something soft and about thirteen-year-old boy sized-

"Silver!" Blue greeted enthusiastically, shuffling off of the impromptu crash-landing pillow. She immediately wrapped her arms around him, resting her cheek on the top of his head, "You even broke my fall, thanks!"

She did her best to keep her voice upbeat and cheerful, to not let the worry she had experienced the last year over Silver's whereabouts leak into her tone. While she had absolutely no doubt in her mind that Silver could--and did--handle himself, there was no stopping the protective streak that she had fostered towards him beginning when she was five years old.

Blue squeezed Silver tighter against her, "When did you get here?" And the hug intensified.

Silver was a tough kid. He could withstand a little loving smothering.

A little loving smothering, Silver could handle. This was a good deal more than a little. But Silver handled it anyway, because he was Silver, and because she was Blue, whom he had last seen standing triumphantly on the back of a giant bird, after conquering her fears and throwing her insecurities to the wind. That meant he could handle it if she weighed an extra seventy kilograms. Because she was Blue.

That said, she'd landed pretty hard.

"About five hours ago," he said, in a voice indicating that he was quickly losing air pressure.
