It had surprised Miria to see Galatea rise early, but only very slightly this time, as she was beginning to grow used to the continued exposure of Galatea's emotional depths past her vanity and her ego. It made a curious sort of warmth spread through her for a few moments, to watch the other girl come down the steps into the common room so soon after the day had begun. Because of Kurt, she thought. Because they cared for him.

Miria herself had been up since before the sun had risen, to complete her morning training cycle in one of the empty classrooms. She had returned to the tower sooner than she would have normally, to shower and dress for the day in time to catch Kurt before he left for the day's classes.

And so she was sitting in one of the common room's large chairs, freshly showered and prepared for the day, doing some supplementary reading for her Charms class, when Kurt Wagner came down the stairs.

"I hope you are prepared for today's Quidditch practice," she said, her voice perhaps slightly warmer than usual. He was her teammate after all. She could afford to show him some kindness.

Kurt froze at the voices of his housemates. He'd expected the common room to be deserted this late- Professor Nanao frowned severly on anyone who missed breakfast- and his first response was to assume they hadn't been talking to him and hide until they left.

After another moments' thought, Kurt realised that Galatea and Miria must have waited for him. Kurt looked from one to the other, incredulously. How had they known?

Neither had turned to look at him. Neither would see if he simply turned around and returned to his dormitary. The idea was tempting, safe, easy...

Nein, if there was anyone in this school he could trust they were the two girls before him. He would trust them.

Despite that conviction each step down the stairs was a fight against the urge to go back to his room to get a sweater, or possibly just to stay there for another month or so.

But at last there he was, standing at the bottom of the stairs and feeling exposed, awkward and vulnerable without the charm. He rubbed his wrist nervously, stumbling over his words.

"I am. Ready, that is. For practice."

Miria placed her bookmark between the pages she was on, and snapped her book shut. "I expect you will perform admirably, Kurt," she said. He was really an excellent Chaser, she would hate to lose him. But even more, she would hate to lose him as a friend.

She was not one to smile often, indeed there were perhaps only one or two in the entire school who had seen such an expression cross Miria's face, but nonetheless, as she looked up at Kurt, there it was. It was hardly noticeable, her lips curved up at the corners just barely, but if Kurt knew her well - and he did, she was sure - he would see it.

The expression disappeared as soon as Miria felt Galatea's hand on her shoulder. "I ask nothing more of you than I am certain you can survive," she said almost primly, and stood, putting her book in her bag. "But breakfast is, perhaps, a good idea."

Kurt's hands stilled and he glanced down at them. The panic at seeing blue rose up within him, but fainter than when he'd first looked in the mirror half an hour ago. He resisted the urge to apologise. He'd done enough of that already.

"Thank you," he said instead, both in response to Miria's compliment and also to them both for being here and waiting for him and... being his friend.

He returned a small smile back at Miria, so rare was the sight that he made sure to pay full attention before it faded a second later.

"Breakfast sounds like an excellent idea." he agreed, and couldn't help but smile wider as Galatea too flashed him a smile of her own.

He had to stop a moment before moving to join the two of them, as he was suddenly overcome with gratitude towards these two excellent women who, for reasons he could not quite grasp, had decided he was their friend. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath.

When he opened them again Kurt's smile was another step closer to his old carefree one. "And one never knows. The Moogles may have finally learned how to properly make porridge."

"I do not," Miria replied, as she rose to accompany her teammates to the Great Hall for breakfast. "It is simply a truth that I thought best spoken." And indeed, it was. Miria was not often free with her praise, and that she had said anything at all was testament to the fact that Kurt truly impressed her, both on and off the Quidditch pitch.

If she were one to roll her eyes, at Galatea's further comments, Miria would have. As it was, she merely slung her bag over her shoulder and exited the room after the taller girl.

"I find the porridge entirely satisfactory."
