People will always compare. Mr Down-the-Street probably feels superior. Let him. He doesn't know you. He has a picture in his mind of a rich family that thinks sending the kids out with the nanny is quality family time. If that makes him hugs his kids a few extra times as he smugly thinks about what a great dad he is, fine. He's all wrong, but unless your sitter is ready to rip him a new one the next time he opens his mouth, nothing's going to change his mind until he decides to get to know you all.

Meanwhile, you do not need to explain yourself. You do what works for you and for your family. Anyone who takes the time to know you doesn't need an explanation.

I nannied for a woman who was a SAHM. She has two sets of twins, 4 years apart. One of the older set has an ASD. Did she need a nanny? Who the hell's business was it but hers???! Some folks were judgemental about it. Some weren't. (I knew about it because we had the same set of friends -- it was a slightly odd situation that was supposed to be very short-term but worked out for her family and mine for almost year and a half, until I moved away.)

Anyway, SP, don't let someone else's lack of knowledge get to you. He'll probably always feel superior. He just won't _be_ superior. Hubris bites us in the butt when we least expect it. He'll someday have a revelation and regret his smugness.
