I love people!

ThiS may not be the most noteworthy of entries, but I'm so giddy at the moment, I felt commemorate it.

Today I had a lot of really pleasant interactions...

This evening was the premiere of the reconstructed version of Metropolis (over 1/4 of the film, which had been destroyed, was discovered in Chile)... As part of the 60th anniversary of the Berlinale (Berlin Film Festival), it was projected for the public on the Brandenburg Gate.

I got there about 2 hours early (decked out in ski gear), expecting Pariser Platz to be packed. It appears, however, that most people were not quite as enthusiastic as I was (it was nearly desolate), so I retreated to Starbucks to kill some time/ stay warm. While in Starbucks, I noticed a CNN cameraman and asked him a question about the screening. Turns out he was an Australian based in London, working for CNN International. Then he introduced me to his compadre, a German who was born in Köln, spent three years of his childhood in Detroit, and now lives in London. We chatted for about an hour about film noir, metropolis, the berlinale (they get to go to the premiere of the new scorseze film, which both scorseze and leo will be attending), soccer teams, 3D film, vegemite, parts of the world, etc. It was really pleasant.

afterwards, i headed back out to Pariser Platz to claim a spot, and noticed that the guys in front of me were speaking english. it turns out they were from minnesota, studying at a university in wisconsin, and doing a study abroad program where they hit about 6 major european cities in 3 months. they were also really nice, and i ended up translating about half the movie for them (until they got too cold and called it a night).

during the second half of the movie, one of my neighbors gave me a delicious slice cake. by this point, everyone was dancing and hopping because we'd all been outside in the snow for a couple hours.

after the movie (and 3 hours in non-stop snow), i asked a russian guy for directions to the U-Bahn station, and we ended up chatting about russia, the cities in america that his brother has visited, his love of american sports, german universities, etc. on the way (he wanted to make sure i was able to find it).

then on the U-Bahn I ended up befriending some kids in animal suits who turned out to live down the street from me. we may end up hanging out in the future.
rabbit: woher kommst du?
me: aus den USA
pig: you can speak english to us, you know. we are educated.

haha again, not really a noteworthy entry. it was just really nice to meet so many nice people on the same day. i wanted to remember it. :)

tschüss!
