i love love love riding my bike in this weather (and the emotional comfort of wearing a sweater). i don't know that i've fully embraced the heat of this desert. the cold feels so much more natural to me than the basting heat of our summers; like my coping mechanisms were formed to deny subzero temperatures the gratification of frostbite. if i could make it feel this cool all year i would. it's crisp enough to wake my brain up, cold enough to share my bed for warmth, warm enough to avoid rampant shivers that keep me up at night...
i was biking from home to emma's and i noticed all kinds of different food smells wafting out of the houses and it made me happy that not all people eat microwavable food all the time. it made me feel like there are still people out there who care about themselves and their families enough to take the time to eat their vegetables and care about each other's health. i swear i smelled meatloaf, chile rellenos, hamburgers and squash (warm, rich wintery foods).

i ride past the Grill on the way to work and this morning their dumpster was exploding with gluttonous pigeons tearing at the bags full of stale french fries and greasy diner left overs. i couldn't help but yell at them in frustration-- i'm sure they're the same ones that hang out on my stoop and shit all over my porch, those bastard rats-with-wings!
