Death by Plastic

Some things really make me sad.

This video was sent to me by 'Gutza', a Romanian who says he's not proud to show me this. He also says that if nobody raises awareness about the pollution and waste problem in Romania they're going to be the first to suffer - and, of course, the rest of Europe along with them.

He also wants to point out that not all rivers in Romania look this way, but if improperly regulated this problem can only escalate.

Today our sister group at work was cleaning out their lab bench space. It's a shame how much plastic waste the biotech industry creates. And my company is actually quite "green" in its practices, compared to many others. Unfortunately, it really comes down to the individual players and their own points of view in life.

Anyway, so these ladies were just throwing everything away in the trash, even though we have designated recycling bins (big blue things with the triangle-arrow thingies), so I came by and started reaching into the trash to start picking things out. I was holding a bunch of cardboard boxes, paper manuals, and plastic trays in my arms when I said to them "Did you know that all paper can be recycled? And that all plastic that have this triangle symbol on them as well as plastic bags can be recycled too?" And they were like "Oh wow, really? Thank you for policing us." But I think they get the point.

I wish people would feel more empathy towards this beautiful diverse planet we all share, and realize that we should all do our part because we are part of a greater community... not because someone is policing them. :(
