Taking 3-D Photographs

Sep 08, 2009 22:22

Took a trip to Yosemite coupla weeks ago. I hate how pictures of scenery always comes out looking really flat, especially if you have a super dinky camera like I do. So, I decided to try making stereo photos so that you can watch them in 3-D! Thanks to the internets and photo-editing software...like photoshop..., we now have the technology! :) Here ( Read more... )

The only two links I can find right now are:

I'll walk you through how I made them-- it's pretty easy:

Take two photos of the same thing. Try to line up the photos almost exactly EXCEPT take the second photo after shifting left/right a few inches. This is probably the hardest step, and takes the most thought.

The concept is this: we see things in stereo because our eyes are a few inches apart and our brain is able to stitch the two separate images together to make a 3D image. If one photo represents what our left eye sees and the other is what the right eye sees, we can fool the brain into seeing the two photos in stereo by quickly shifting between the two.

Start out by taking 3 or 4 photos of the same thing, shifting a little between each shot--this way you have a few choices for which two (or 3) have the best effect. Then use photoshop, or the like, to line the pictures up at wherever you want the focus to be. If you use photoshop, you can animate it by going to windows>animation and selecting/deselecting the different layers that go on each frame. Then make sure you save it as save for web>gif to preserve the animation. (let me know if you have any questions with this part!)

If you want to use google, I would search for things like: animated gif photo stereograms. I have not done this so I have no idea what the results are like.

It'll probably take you a few tries to figure it out, but I'm sure you can do it! :) It's a fun way to spice up your image gallery. You'll also learn that some shots work better than others (like how the branches one works better than the landscape ones).

I'll probably make a post about this on inspirimint in the near future...

Let me know how it goes, and be sure to post them!! <3
