Let me preface this by saying I am completely unspoiled for anything past season one of this show. And I would like to remain that way :)
Let's start with the obvious Don Draper. I kinda hate him? I have no idea what fandom at large thinks about this show or it's characters, but aside from the fact that he's incredibly dashing, talented and intelligent he's a giant jerk! And I don't even mean to Pete Campbell (who is so different from Connor, but more on that later) because let's face it he just asks for it, but to Betty! He has this gorgeous wife at home but insists on having these emotional/sexual affairs with other women. I figured out by the end of the season that when he's feeling happy he goes to Midge and when he's upset he goes to Rachel Menken. I'm sure we get more insight into his and Betty's relationship, but I'm kinda shocked that Don Draper's a cheater. When I guess I really shouldn't be because it's the 60's and according to this show no man is faithful to his wife.
All right moving on to Betty Draper. As I said in one of my posts yesterday this lady is FIERCE. I loved how she told Don not to go over to their neighbor, and then she takes her bad day out on those poor birds by shooting at them. I am really interested in seeing where they go with her character. I wonder how Don will react if/when the psychiatrist tells him Betty is aware of his affairs.
Peggy Olson - She's the lead actress of this show? Honestly, I wouldn't have thought there were any. Did not see her pregnancy coming AT ALL. I just thought she was overwhelmed at work and eating her feelings. That should be interesting to see what she decides to do about the baby. If Pete can't afford to have a child with his wife, how the hell can Peggy afford one on her own??
Speaking of Pete Campbell, I find him hilarious. The way he speaks is ridiculous, and he is way too uptight that it gives others (Don) a kick to get under his skin. He's a jerk too, but not even close to being on Don's level (though he'd love to be). His situation at home with his wife and her overbearing parents is very amusing.
My second favorite character after Betty is Joan. Which I find incredibly amusing because female characters are hardly ever my favorite. But these two are such badass women it's amazing. Like I said I don't know what fandom thinks (so please tell me!), but I'm sure I have differing opinions (as usual). I thought the last scene when Don comes home to an empty house after getting all nostalgic at work was perfect. He chose to isolate himself from his family, and it seemed like he regretted it at the end.
I'm also enjoying the portrayal of the 60's. I don't think I've ever watched a show that took place in this time period (maybe The Wonder Years?). I laughed when Don was driving around with a tumbler in the passenger seat (and it's a little sad that I first typed tumblr - I need to get off the internet), and all these pregnant women are smoking and drinking. I'm not a smoker, so it really grossed me out when they were smoking while eating dinner!
