Santa Cruz Newsletter #1 2006

We're at that point again - time for the Santa Cruz News Letter!

I moved back to Santa Cruz on the 3rd of January, into the on campus apartment I would have been in anyway. I have 5 other housemates. The first is Wendy, my roommate from last year. Shes living in one of the single rooms. My roomie this year is my friend Meagan, someone I met last year and MUST have talked about. She is really easy to live with and quite funny. Across the hall are the boys, Stefan who is very tall and like music is in the other single. Matt who isn't quite as tall but is still kind of tall and likes music too,as well as other stuff, is living in the other double with Ian who isn't very tall but is kind of skinny. Every one in the house is ha-larious. In fact, I think I'm the least funny person living there (which as you all know is VERY hard to believe :D ). So far (only a week!) we're all getting along really well. Meagan is easy to live with, Wendy keeps to herself as always, and the boys are always in clothing which is nice 'cause boys are icky. We all make our own food, though we do share for the most part. For example, I don't eat Matt's cereal and he doesn't eat my pasta (not that the boys NEED anymore pasta...) though Saturday night I made tacos for the house and people all chipped in stuff (taco shells, burrito wraps, guacamole, etc.) and it was delicious.

My classes this quarter are really interesting, too. I'm taking 'History of the World Since 1500' with a very interesting professor, though the book we're currently reading is very dull. It is also written by his good friend so I can't really point that fact out to him, now can I? I've only had one class with him, so I'm not sure it will be phenomenal or anything, but so far it is being pretty cool. My second class is 'Lit 1 - Literary Interpretations' with a small but vibrant lady. A guy sitting behind me in class described her as "small as a thumbtack" and I am inclined to agree. She talks a lot, but the class should be pretty interesting. Its a lot of reading and even MORE writing, and Ive read a bunch of the books already (Autobiography of Frederick Douglass, Narratives of a Slave Girl, The Tempest) but there are some (Frankenstein, Benito Cereno) that I haven't. It looks like its going to be a good mix. My third class is one that I was hoping I would be able to get into. Intermediate Creative Writing is a class you have to apply to get into. The first day of class you bring a portfolio and turn it into the professor. He looks at everyone's writings and picks 18 students from the hundred that applied. I was lucky and am one of the few, the proud. I got in on my first try. I jumped up and down when I found out and ran to call my mother. She wasn't there so I called dad. He lacked the enthusiasm I had. Tut tut. Anyway, the exciting thing is, once i take this class (and pass) I can apply to the Creative Writing Major (though I have to go through the whole application process again, this time even harder and more competitive). I'll manage.

In the mean time, Im focusing on classes more than I was. I missed this very much and I'm very glad to be back.

I guess its a short newsletter this time. Talk to you all later!

Love, Kate
