“Actually, I already-Oh! Hey Cloud! Over here!-Look, Keegan’s really better at this sort of thing than I am, so talk to him okay? Later!”

Fredricks felt himself beginning to fume as one SOLDIER 1st Class Zack Fair walked away from him and gave the blond trooper a noogie.

Resettling his expression in a pleasant neutral, Fredricks simply left the SOLDIER floor entry and headed back towards the lounge area.

Three weeks he’d been trying to cultivate Zack Fair, and each and every time it had ended the same way.

It was simple really. Get transferred to a new group, play the eager-to-learn new-comer and find out which of them are the rising stars. From those select the best of the lot for his purposes-priority on it not being someone who would get him killed. Learn everything he could about the target, then over the course of a month or two, begin to behave in a way that was pleasing to the target.

Once the ‘friendship’ was cemented, subtly encourage the target to go further when accomplishing his goals-even if it meant going against common sense. The resulting glory wouldn’t all land on the target, and Fredricks would be quite happy to pick up what missed. Eventually the target would get themselves killed, and someone, out of pity, would give him something or help him, in the name of that ‘friendship’ and he would be all the more closer to his goal.

It was the perfect plan, and really, he should know.

It was how he got into SOLDIER.

But it wouldn’t work unless his target cooperated, and honestly what was so special about Cloud Strife that someone like Zack Fair would take an interest in him? Strife was a nobody from the Nibel Mountain hicks! No political connections, not even the tiniest branch on any of the noble trees-alive or dead, he’d checked. Fredricks on the other hand had all of those and more, he never had so much trou-

“SOLDIER 3rd Class, Fredricks?” Jumping slightly, he turned to find none other than Director Lazard standing behind him.

Quickly coming to a salute, he responded with a “Yes Sir?” No guards, so he wasn’t in trouble…

“I’d like to speak with you about something, if you would please follow me?”

“Of course.” Like anyone would say no! “May I ask what you want to talk to me about?”

“Your behavior Fredricks, both before and during your time in SOLDIER. Follow me.”

Slowly, Fredricks felt a sinking feeling develop in his gut.

Seeing an uncomfortably familiar set of shoulders following Lazard’s pinstripes, Zack release a sigh of relief, finally.

“Zack, is something wrong?” turning back to the blond, Zack suppressed a snigger as he could swear he saw several of Cloud’s spikes twitch in his direction, before dropping down to look into endless blue.

“Don’t worry about it. Just an irritant that’s just been removed, that’s all. Ready to try those drills again?”

“Yeah, if you’re sure you have the time?”

“Relax Cloud; I’ll always have time for you.”
