Mikaela looked up in time to find Simmons looking down at her with that undressing her with his eyes leer that gave her the creeps. He'd already proved that he was not to be trusted. He still made her nervous when he strayed too far from his boss.
"How's it coming?" he asked, his eyes scanning the giant robot from head to reconnected toes.
"Good." Biting back the instinctive retort that rose to her lips, she let her eyes drop back to the wrench in her hand. "There's a lot of damage, though. I don't know if he'll ever be operational again."
"We spent a lot of money retrieving him from the bottom of the ocean, little lady. When we're ready for him, you better make sure he works."
"I was out there when he was defeated," she spat without looking up. "I saw what the allspark did." She didn't resist the shudder that trembled through her body. "Nothing could survive that."
She felt Simmons' eyes on her a moment longer and then heard his footsteps as he retreated. Slowly, she lifted her eyes until she could follow him back out of the hanger. He could still be there, watching. She had to be careful if she didn't want to be found out.
Threading another bolt into its socket, she worked it until it was tight, whispering, "If you know what's good for you, you'll stay down." She fingered the fragment of allspark left in her pocket. "I only gave you enough spark to revive you. If you want the rest, you'll have to do what I say."
The form rumbled beneath her.
"Not a team player, Megatron?"
"What do you want?" His voice was surprisingly soft.
She didn't deceive herself into thinking he was weak or that he'd suddenly had a change of heart. More likely, he'd been aware enough to hear the conversation between her and Simmons. More than likely, he was biding his time.
"I want to expose these people who are blackmailing me." God, she hated Simmons. Sector 7 was supposed to be out of business. Instead, they'd gone underground and managed to raise all the damaged robots from the ocean to study them, to turn them into weapons for their own use. "I want you to take them out and then call off your goons and get off Earth once and for all."
The giant robot laughed. "Why should I..."
"Because I have something you want." She fingered the allspark shard again.
"How do you know I won't turn on you once..."
She whirled so fast she lost her grip on the wrench. "Let's get one thing straight, Megatron." Face to face with the evil alien, she said, "I put you back together and I can take you apart again."
"I hardly think..."
"That's it. That's the problem." She leapt from his frame, landed on the ground beside his head. "Like all men, you don't think." She allowed herself the luxury of a grin. "You don't really think I'd put you together without a failsafe...do you?"
Worry crept into Megatron's voice. "What do you mean?"
"Double cross me, and you'll find out." She turned toward the door. Slipping the allspark fragment from her pocket, she held it up for him to see. "Do what I want, and you'll get off this planet...in one piece."
She strode to the door without looking back, thankful she'd decided to be honest with the Secretary of Defense when Simmons had first come in search of her, first threatened her father if she didn't do what he wanted.
She wasn't surprised to find him outside, lording over his men.
"All finished?" he asked with a glint to his eyes.
"He's as good as new." For all practical purposes, that was true.
"You seem pretty pleased with yourself."
Mikaela smiled, feeling, for once, in control of her own life. "Yeah, I guess I am. It's been a while since I could hold my head up high."
