The sky had been clear earlier, so Yuki had not brought an umbrella along with him when he went to Tohru's workplace to pick her up. When he arrived, it had begun to downpour (although it had been not even completely cloudy), but luckily, Tohru had her umbrella with her, as she had heard that there would be a slight chance of rain. Yuki was embarrassed, but also privately happy that he could share an umbrella with Tohru.
"Honda-san, were you waiting long?" Yuki asked as he and Tohru began walking home. He held onto the umbrella, and Tohru's arm was lightly linked with his left.
"No," Tohru answered with her usual smile. "I'm always happy when you come pick me up."
Yuki also smiled. "It's my pleasure, Honda-san."
The rain pounded on the umbrella, but it didn't seem to damper Tohru's spirits at all. In fact, she almost seemed happier than usual. Suddenly, she exclaimed, "Yuki-kun, look over there!"
Yuki looked in the direction Tohru was pointing, and he saw a rainbow. Nearly the entire arch was visible, and somehow it appeared more vivid than normal. "Isn't it pretty?" Tohru said as she smiled brightly. "I love days like these because there's a chance of a rainbow appearing!"
"Yes, it's very pretty," Yuki replied, although more of his attention was focused on Tohru. As a child, he wasn't really interested in seeing rainbows, and even now they really didn't interest him. But since he was with Tohru now, a rainbow seemed more special somehow. He moved the umbrella from his left hand to his right hand and then gently gripped Tohru's hand with his left, all while making sure to keep the umbrella above himself and her. "I'm happy to see this rainbow with you."
Tohru blushed slightly at those words, although her smile didn't fade at all. One of the things that fascinated Yuki most about Tohru was her inclination to see hope even in the most dismal of situations. She was like a rainbow herself, he thought.
The rain was letting up, and Tohru rested her head on Yuki's shoulder. He loved her, but he still wasn't ready to admit his feelings. Right now, he was satisfied with just being quietly fascinated.
