It's not like it's the first time she's done something like this, she reminds herself, and pastes her smile into place.

The library is quiet, hushed, oppressive. She hates the sound of it; wants abruptly to cover her ears and scream, an animal raging to hear itself speak. She doesn't. Instead, she winds her way over to the desk that she's targetted, puts a hand on it, leans over. She's worn her tie loose today so a hint of breast will show.

Juri barely looks up. "And what do you want today?"

Kozue smiles. "Well, you know," she says. "I thought we could talk."

"Talk," Juri says. She closes her book and rises. "This is a library. It isn't a place to talk."

"Let's go somewhere else, then," Kozue says. "I've got a lot of interest in you, you know. You can really win a girl over. It's like it doesn't matter that you're a woman."

Juri's shoulders hunch, and then she pushes off the table with one hand, rising. "If you say so. Is this about my friendship with Miki?"

A hot flush of anger. She swallows it; it won't do to come out right now. "If it was?"

A shake of her head, and Juri looks directly at her. "What would it take, I wonder, to convince you to be a little kind to him?"

Kozue laughs. "A miracle, perhaps."

There's a lot playing into this. Pitchers and butterflies and the warmth of sunlight, a distant past you can never go back to, however much you rage against the current time and current place. Scissors and cut out photographs. Gardens of roses and gardens of roses, sweet-scented and never-changing, sweet-scented and long ago. The oppressive feeling that if you'd only just -- something -- things would be different. The way it would be kinder if you could pick your own love. That elusive transcendant thing that's always out of reach; fuck it, you don't need it anyway.

Her back hits the tree hard. Juri is raging at her to the point she can barely even make out what she's saying, and Kozue is winded from having run away this far. She's still smiling.

"-- some kind of joke, you're always so cruel--"

She hurts. She can taste blood in her mouth. She reaches out and puts her arms around Juri anyway, draws her close, "So prove it," she says. "You don't have to hold yourself so aloof. If you never wanted it anyway, go ahead and take it, so you can prove how useless it is."

Juri says, bitterly, "There isn't a single thing you won't touch, is there," and slides a hand up her shirt.

"Ah," says Kozue, and tilts her head back. Passing by on the path, Miki has stopped to stare at them. She pretends not to notice, doesn't turn her head to watch him go until he's running and not looking back.

She could stop here; she's got what she wanted, but Juri's still pretty violent at this point, and there's no reason to not continue.
