.1.

"C'mon, Roxas," Axel says. He circles Roxas, arms out, smirking. "C'mon, what're you afraid of?"

Roxas looks at him flatly, eyes cold and hard, the brilliant blinding-ness of light off ice. "I'm not afraid."

"What, then?" Axel asks, and he throws his arms out to both sides, calls his chakrams to his hands in a burst of flame. Knees bent inwards, arms akimbo, he swings them, letting the motion carry his body around at the hips. "It's just a fight, Roxas, c'mon."

Roxas crosses his arms. "It's just that you're not worth my time," he says.

Axel laughs, tosses his head back. "Oh, yeah, Roxas," he says. "That's so like you, isn't it? But you'll fight me anyway, if I make you--" and he throws himself at Roxas, sets the world around them on fire.

With a sigh, Roxas calls his keyblades, counters the first lunging strike. "Because it's beneath me to let you hurt me, as well," Roxas says.

*

After, Roxas stands over Axel with a keyblade to his throat and Axel tilts his head back and grins widely because the whole thing almost feels good. He's beaten and hurt; Roxas holds two of the few weapons out there that can hurt them, and each bruise feels real; the blood behind his teeth feels real. "That's the stuff, Roxas," Axel says.

"You're disgusting."

.2.

He comes back from Castle Oblivion feeling strangely alive, like the deaths of all the others somehow made him younger or more real, like all the plotting and the frantic attempt to keep ahead of everything for someone else's sake, like all of that put something in him. It's not a heart, but it's something -- he doesn't know what it is, just that it's fluttering and wild and desperate and making him smile so widely it hurts him.

It doesn't do him any favors at the trial, where he stands in front of Xemnas and the others all hooded -- like that'd hide who they were, like he doesn't know them all, know how they all are -- and waits out the insinuations of intentionality (no shit he'd intended to destroy them all, what's their point? Not that he says that). He plays innocent, plays his cards out carefully -- he had to, man, Vexen had to die to trick Marluxia, and Larxene had to die to lure Marluxia out, and who knows what Marluxia'd have done if he'd gotten away in the state he was in? Dunno what happened to Zexion and Lexaeus, but Riku was running around the place, so it was probably their own bad luck. Nah, no idea where Namine is, sorry.

Eventually he's free from their questioning, if not free from suspicion, and he immediately heads out into the Dark City, because Roxas wasn't at his trial so he was probably out working. It takes some searching, but he eventually finds him out there, standing in the rain on some old rusted scrap metal, his keyblades steaming.

"Hey, Roxas," Axel says, and he still feels giddy, almost delirious. He approaches like a cat on the hunt and Roxas turns and looks at him warily. "Roxas!"

"What? You're back already?"

Axel laughs, because Roxas doesn't know, and that's good. Whatever had put that troubled look on Roxas's face didn't have anything to do with him, then. He keeps walking; Roxas has to step back to avoid him, and again, until his back was against a wall. "Did you miss me?"

"No."

He pins Roxas against the wall with the length of his body, rubs against him. "Mmhm..."

Roxas is tense. "Are you looking for a fight?"

"What?" Axel says, and laughs. "Is the only time you'll give me a fight when I don't beg you? Maybe I want to beg you for something else, right now."

Roxas stares at him with a narrow suspicious gaze, inches away. "What?" he asks.

"Fuck me," Axel says into his ear, and laughs as Roxas tenses more. "C'mon, Roxas, it'd be fun. I wanna push you down, but you won't let me, right? C'mon, let me--" he presses his mouth to Roxas'.

A moment later, Roxas shoves him back with a keyblade. Axel laughs again and calls his chakrams.

.3.

He doesn't beg with the Organization not to send him -- he's got his pride, after all, and his initial protest had been met with a warning shot; he's not going to die for this, not like that.

He won't go to that rat bastard either, won't beg for him to let Roxas go -- pretty much pointless. It's not like he's got anything resembling a conscience to appeal to, and not like either of them matter. He's on his own.

Instead he plans to beg Roxas; if he does, Roxas will have to remember him. He rehearses to himself the casual way to approach, the things to say, to demand Roxas remember -- hell, they're friends, right? Even if the rumors are true and Roxas had forgotten, he'll have to remember if Axel reminds him.

And if he doesn't, Axel doesn't know what he'll do. He can't go back like this and he can't imagine going on without him. He'll just keep trying. It's all he could do. Just beg until Roxas cracks. It'll have to work. It can't go wrong.

It'll be fine.

kingdom hearts, harukami
