Instructions to the Cook ~ A Zen Master's Lessons in Living a Life that Matters
by Bernard Glassman & Rick Fields:

This book definitely has its moments, but overall not highly recommended--at least by me--because the quality of the writing doesn't make me want to return to the book. It also annoys me how far they indent each paragraph (picky, picky, picky).

Descartes' Bones: A Skeletal History of the Conflict Between Faith and Reason
by Russell Shorto:

I am not that far in it yet, but, so far, highly recommended! Fascinating history of philosophy, concepts of faith and reason, but told in a way such that the times, people, and places are rendered vividly.

From The New Yorker. I like the youth and age aspects of this short story--that stuff's starting to speak to me.
"The Tree Line, Kansas, 1934"

In the  11/15/10 NYer there's a story by Tessa Hadley I liked. Love her description. Also, a wonderful profile of Bettye LaVette. I'm behind on NYer reading (as always), so these statements don't imply that I didn't like other things I didn't mention.
