Brentwood MD -- the natural aspect

Feb 28, 2009 08:49

A week or two ago, there was discussion on the Mt Rainier, Brentwood, and Hyattsville listservs about the brown water in parts of the northwest branch of the Anacostia that flows through our communities. This post is about the water, and also mentions the piles of woodchips near the water on 37th St just outside the Brentwood maintenance yard (or Grape St, as I believe that short section of road is known).

On 2/21/09 I noticed that the brown water seemed to be starting at a point just west of the 37th Street bridge in Brentwood, right near the yard where Brentwood keeps its trucks, tools, etc. Here is a view off the bridge, looking west. The brown water seemed to be starting somewhere within the red-circled area. Before that (farther back into the picture, closer to Mount Rainier, where the water is flowing from), the water seems relatively clear. Red arrow shows direction of water flow.

Maybe the source of the brown liquid is under the bridge too, because on the other side of the bridge, as you can see, the water is plenty brown! Looking east from bridge.

It also concerns me that the town is piling up more and more wood chips by the water. i don't want them to end up in the water. (Still, as you can see here, there aren't enough woodchips piled up yet to block folks from dumping furniture. Anyone want a couch? Chair? Did someone take the mattress that was there a few weeks ago?)

There's already a lot of silt and stuff in the water.
