I'm engaged

I've been dating Kevin for more than six years but as of July 22 he is officially my fiance. We were friends before we were dating so our first date actually caught me by surprise. He intended it as a date from the get go, I thought it was just dinner and a movie with a friend and actually kept inviting other people to come along. Fortunately for him no one but the two of us seemed to want to see "Hotel Rwanda" so we wound up alone. I didn't realize it was a date until he grabbed the check.

So perhaps unsurprisingly this big date also involved some trickery. Kevin had just received his quarterly review and said that since it was the end of his first year at the company they were giving him a $200 gift certificate to a restaurant of his choice as an additional bonus. This seemed plausible since the company hosts big quarterly dinners at fancy restaurants for all of its employees plus tons of other big events throughout the year. Plus Kevin kept saying stuff like he wasn't sure when we'd be able to go since the person in charge was out and that he wasn't exactly sure how it worked which made it seem real. But I was a little suspicious. I'm almost always the one to make restaurant reservations because I like planning things and am so tuned into the local scene through work. The thought had actually occurred to me that if he wanted to surprise me with a fancy dinner it might be tricky for that reason.

I picked Sushi SambaRio because it's beautiful and delicious and we hadn't been in years. We were perusing the menu and asking for recommendations when our server mentioned we could go with the omikase menu, where they just bring you things based on what you say you like and your price range. We mentioned the gift card and after that she started bringing out an awesome parade of delicious surprise food. There was amazing marinated and grilled flank steak, sea bass kabobs and asparagus, scallops served in the shell covered with baked cheese and spinach, seafood ceviche, the best tuna sushi I've ever had and short rib dumplings all accompanied by excellent cocktails.

When it was clear we were slowing down our server came by to ask if we were ready for dessert. We said we were and Kevin then got up to go to the bathroom. When he came back he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said I'd just been waiting for him to ask. There was kissing and when the tables near us realized what was going on a lot of clapping. Our server had no idea that this was happening until then either but brought out a pair of glasses of champagne for us on the house. There were lots of congratulations from strangers and a delicious dessert that sort of went by in a blur as Kevin confessed my parents had known this was happening since he called to ask for their blessing Wednesday.

The date's not set on the wedding but it's been an exciting time!
