No more princesses

I just read a story reporting that "Tangled" will be Disney's last fairy tale musical for the foreseeable future. The article cited a host of reasons from both Disney execs and experts. They said that the archetype of a woman being taken care of by a prince is outdated. They also said that little girls no longer want to be princesses, they want to be hot and cool, citing the popularity of Bratz dolls as evidence.

I loved "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid" as a kid and it wasn't because I dreamed of having a strapping, rich man sweep me off my feet. I admired Belle as a fellow book worm with a big imagination. I appreciated Ariel's desire to explore and her willingness to mix it up with Ursula at the end of the movie. Plus the music was fantastic.

It's the end of an era and I'm sad for it. Call me old fashioned but I'd rather be an adventurous and ambitious princess than a hot and cool brat.
