Maybe it was unfair of me to expect us to find ourselves bombarded by Mormon paraphanalia immediatly following the state line but I was surprised not to see any signs of it with the exception of the massive churches that towered over the tiny towns with populations that I did not expect could fill them.
I was most excited to see the Great Salt Lake which did not disappoint. It was the most amazing blue it seemed out of place and looked like it would freeze you on impact. A word to the Utah tourism department though - create a view spot, welcome shack, pull off, exit, ANYTHING that would allow people to actually stop and take in the lake for a minute!!! We could not find a spot to even slow down below our 75 miles an hour to appreciate it, it seems you have to drive to the opposite side of the lake to enjoy it, sadly. But I was just happy to have the chance to see it and felt a little guilty that Chris ahd to try to see it while still focusing on the road.
Just north of Salt Lake City and the basketball tournament chaos our journey sent us East on I80 where we would spend almost the entire remainder of our trip. Our trip on 80 started with a bang. It turns out that the gateway to true cowboy country is the most beautiful red rock gorge you have ever seen or imagined in your life.
We wound back and fourth on the twisty road at the bottom of the gorge, gasping at the finish of each turn as we pointed out new colors in the rock, bubbling rivers racing next to the car and trains practically clinging for dear life to the side of the rock slightly over our heads. Who knew Utah was so beautiful?!
It was just as we approached Wyoming that we saw our very first "Ranch Exit - No Services" sign and we knew we were reaching no man's land.
