We tackled the first half of Idaho in the dark. Even though we were driving in mountains, Orion managed to stay in my window the entire way to our first nights stop where we finally called it quits, and not soon enough; it turns out unlike all other scarcely populated areas, the radio did not consist of Christian or Country, both of which would have been tolerable, but rather Disco. We listened to 70's boogie music for about an hour before we finally settled on the Sawtooth Inn to save our sanity.
In the morning I finally noticed, first, that the entire hotel was decked out in hanging pine trees that reminded me of Christmas and second, that we had managed to pick to hotel with the gun convention at it. As I tip toed out to my car to get my bathroom bag, hair standing on end, mickey mouse shirt on, I opened the door to find 47 giant lumber jackish men wearing camo and carrying guns. Somehow I made it through the crowd of men without a gun shot wound and decided to take an alternate route back in.
We were back on the road just in time for some of the best morning sun where we came to our second range of mountains, that at first glimpse Chris could only describe as "the happiest mountains he had ever seen" which of course, I found adorable! But it really was the perfect description - the fog had settled all around the bottom of the mountain and the sun was sparkling on the white caps with a pale blue sky behind. It was like something Bob Ross painted.
The morning was a beautiful drive and we were relieved to find that as we approached Boise, civilization brought radio options with it. However, we managed to hear Lady Gaga - Bad Romance no fewer than 20 times before we exited the state (and then every half hour as the trip continued). We decided someone was trying to tell us that it needed to be our theme song, so we made sure to crank it up and dance around every time it came on the radio even though we were annoyed as all hell that we were hearing it again. We got pretty good at imitating her strange voice changes.
As the border approached we welcomed Utah with open arms due to the emerging smells. It seems even they knew that they stunk in south east Idaho because they had several truck stops called Stinkers. We were about to get into the most beautiful portion of the trip!!
