Bang, Bang!

It's been a while since I updated. Rather than attempt a detailed and cohesive post about everything I've been up to for the last little while, I am, instead, going to give you some bullet-pointed highlights.

  • Tiffany had an extra ticket to go see Wicked a couple of weekends ago, and very generously offered to take me. I'd never seen a traveling show before, and was a little concerned, based largely on the prejudice of having seen too many shows on Broadway. That said, it was an excellent show. My only real complaint is that the actor playing Fyero was not a particularly strong dancer. He wasn't a bad dancer by any means... Just not a great dancer either. This really only bothers me because a) his big solo number is "Dancing Through Life" and I feel he ought not to have been upstaged by ensemble dancers and b)when he appears at the end as the Scarecrow, his attempt to look like he hasn't quite adjusted to his new straw limbs was just a bit sad.
  • On a related note, I had to bite my tongue at a friend's birthday party this weekend. I was chatting with a few people, including an acquaintance that had also seen Wicked while it's here in Richmond and who said of her experience, "I'd never seen a Broadway show before." I hate to be such a terrible snob, but traveling shows and Broadway shows--while generally closely related--are not the same thing.
  • Boondock Saints 2? Not good. This is particularly a shame because the first movie is not just passably good, but out-and-out excellent. This movie had its moments, but on the whole felt more like a parody of the original than the sequel it deserved.
  • Yesterday Netflix sent me a movie called Penelope, which was, quite frankly, adorable. It's a reverse Beauty and the Beast story and has a fairy tale atmosphere to all the shots and sets that I'm not sure even Tim Burton* could have improved on. There were a couple of plot holes, but they were all of the sort that you generally find in fairy tales, and, as such, seemed totally excusable in this movie. Definitely worth watching, especially if, like me, you have a particular love of retold/alternative fairy tales.
  • Running a 10k this Saturday. Daunting.
  • Need to re-up my LJ subscription but really don't have the money for it right now. Particularly considering that I haven't been posting here all that much lately. I think I may make April a personal NaBloPoMo. Which I suppose would make it PeBloPoMo, instead... but that doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
  • I've been watching a lot of British television lately. I've been watching Coupling on instant viewing as my something-else-to focus on when I'm crocheting or working out. Plus Micah and I finished Season 4 of Doctor Who a few weeks back and then moved immediately into watching Primeval. We just finished season 2 of that--sadly, I think Micah disagrees with me on the point that he ought to dress more like Connor. I'm particularly fond of his waistcoat/t-shirt/fingerless gloves look... and... um.... What was I saying? Right. Lots of British television.
*Burton, besides being one of my favorite directors is, by and large, a teller of fairy tales. Not all his movies fall into this category, but Big Fish? Corpse Bride? Edward Scissorhands? Modern fairy-tales, all.
