They say everybody writes a journal with the hope that someday somebody will read it. I think most people in the explicitly-public LJ-land list interests in the hope that someday somebody will ask about them. This meme, like a dating service, turns all that hoping-somebody-will-ask into a straightforward request. Viva communication!Leave a comment and I will choose 7 of your LJ profile interests for you to explain/write about.
liquiddatura asked about:
Addams Family: I was first introduced to The Addams Family through the movies made in the early 90's with Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci. (And a billion other people, but those are the really big names associated). I loved them. I had a HUGE crush on Wednesday (yes she was a little girl--but let's put this in perspective, so was I. And Christina Ricci is still hot). I wanted to be Morticia, and I still want to live in a spooky mansion and marry a complete eccentric. I quickly came to love the original New Yorker comics--or at least those I could get my hands on. It took me a little while to warm to the old black and white sitcom which is a bit goofier than the movies, but after making the mental adjustment I find that I'm even more in awe of Morticia, and even more in love with the family as a whole.
Jack Rabbit: Many of you know him better as Jack: The Undead Bunny, but "Jack Rabbit" is the official name given by the
Skelanimals people. It was during the last year of Pastimes' King Arthur Festival that myself and some other Pastimes folks were killing time inside the Harrison's Comics in the nearby mall, and I spotted Jack and a couple of other Skelanimals. Seriously? The cutest dead animals evar. As this was just before my move from NJ to MA,
empheliath and
ronsonbeck picked him up as an early apartment-warming gift for me. You'll note that a great many members of the Pastimes crew have LJ icons of themselves and Jack outside of Hammond Castle. For quite a while I had a Jack Bunny keychain as well, but a couple of months before I moved down here the chain bit broke, and I lost it. In truth, I love pretty much all things Skelanimals but Jack has a special place in my heart.
Tad Williams : I first got into his stuff when, at random, I bought a copy of Tailchaser's Song. I'm not going to lie: the title character is a cat. His friends are cats. His enemies are mostly cat/dog demon things, and one of the cat-myths is about the horrors of neutering. But it's a good book. Not long after that
empheliath gave me a copy of the Memory, Sorrow & Thorn trilogy. The first book (The Dragonbone Chair) is extremely slow to start, but once you get into it, there's a beautiful, rich fantasy world there. The Otherworld series takes place primarily in a ridiculously realistic virtual realtiy world and has a lot of really amazing fantasy worlds contained therein. The War of the Flowers is a great stand-alone that does not involve cats, but does take place largely in Fairy. I haven't read his ShadowMarch series yet, but only because I know from experience that starting one of his series before the series is complete will make me crazy.
Bunburying: Alright, first of all, if you don't know what Bunburying is, go read and/or watch The Importance of Being Earnest (I'm looking at you,
empheliath). Seriously. It's one of my most favorite plays ever. I've personally never gone Bunburying, but I sort of would like to. There's something sort of charming and romantic about slipping off without telling anyone where, and, honestly, as someone who is pretty naturally solitary, there's something very real about the need to create a Mr. Bunbury.
Mr. Scolex: This is one of Jhonen Vasquez's pseudonyms. JV is the author/artist of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee!, I Feel Sick, Filler Bunny, and the Bad Art Collection. They're all worth a read although Filler Bunny becomes less and less funny and more and more disturbing upon subsequent readings. JtHM, Squee! and I Feel Sick are all set in the same universe and Johnny knows both Todd and Devi--the main characters of the other series. JV is also the creative force behind Nickelodeon's Invader Zim. I frequently wondered what would possess Nickelodeon to pick up a series by this man, but then I saw the pilot he pitched. The general concept is the same, but the people at Nick were terribly deceived. In any case, it was under the name Mr. Scolex that JV published
Everything Can Be Beaten, one of my favorite inappropriate children's books.
The Decemberists: I'd heard a goodly bit about these guys for a while, but only really got into them after
baronmind played The Mariner's Revenge Song for me. To date, I still only know Picaresque (which has The Mariner's Revenge Song on it), but I really dig them and intend/hope to pick up more and more of their stuff as time goes on.
The Endless: Like every good geek, I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman. I am also a fan of comic books. Joy of joys, two great tastes that taste great together! And although I like Dream and Death (the only two of the Endless to have their own series to my knowledge), I'm more fascinated by Delirium/Delight, and Desire. I'm also really into the idea of anthropomorphic personifications, and I find the concept that such personifications would call each other family even more interesting.
