Mad Art Gallery presents Famous Fictional: Portraits from Comics and Fiction featuring classic and familiar characters from comics and popular fiction. Twenty artists will present some of the most famous or infamous characters from literature and comics painted, illustrated or sculpted. Comics and print items will be available for purchase. The opening reception takes place Friday, January 5th from 7:00 - 11:00 PM. Admissions if free and a cash bar will be available.
Participating artists include: Brian Hurtt, Matt Kindt, Luby, Jessi Kelley, Ted May, Dan Zettwoch, Jason Robards, Patrick Day, Anchovy, Dan Wilson, Brian Yap, Jon Baker, Brian Merkel, Nathan Poetzscher, Jon Reed, Chris Lucas, Sacha Mardou, Kevin Huizenga, Sharlene Kindt, and Christine Norrie.
Zettwoch, Wilson, May and Huizenga are indie comic makers and run the website USS Catastrophe, often cited as one of top location for alternative comics readers on the Internet. The site features several original works and sneak previews by the cartoonists and hosts the first of a new generation of on-line mini-comics stores. Zettwoch’s work often graces the pages of the RFT.
Matt Kindt self-publishes a comic called PISTOLWHIP, along with many others. His online comic Super-Spy has been recognized by several industry publications.
Many of the other artists are involved in commercial arts. Christine Norrie is an illustrator living in New York and does PUMA Advertising storyboards and comics. Chris Lucas is the Head Sculptor designer at the Science Center. Jon Reed works at Zipatoni as an art director. Brian Hurtt draws the amazing comic, THE DAMNED.
