Is it just me...

Or did anyone else think Lily Evans was kind of a jerk?

No, this in no way means to underplay the horribleness of Snape calling her that name. But the person who's been your best friend for years, while under a humiliating attack in front of a crowd of spectators, says something horrible for which he is immediately and desperately sorry and... What I got from their final conversation was that she had been seeing changes in him for quite some time that were very worrisome to her. She kept trying to get him to see that his "friends" were not at all nice people (and even going so far as to call their sense of humor "evil"), but he didn't really hear her because he was accepted among them ( ... )

I think that's how we're supposed to read it, but then why not try to use his remorse? Why not say this is the deciding point, it's either them or me? Considering how remorseful and terrified of losing her he was it could've gone either way. Yeah, I think there's a chance he'd have gone with the DE's, but if he knew everything with Lily was on the line there's a chance he might not have.

It seemed (to me) that she knew she could play that card but just didn't care anymore. Which is a shame because her friendship was probably the only thing in the world keeping him from embracing the DEs wholeheartedly.

I guess she was trying to portray Lily as someone who would express her concerns but stop short of outright manipulation. I mean, I think it was pretty clear that it was the deciding point, where he needed to choose them or her, and when she mentioned the Death Eaters, he didn't even try to wriggle out of it. He wanted to have his cake and eat it too ( ... )

I'm going to just jump in on this one and say I fully agree on the view of 'Lily and the Proverbial Straw' (maybe that'll be a fan-fic someday)

You took the thoughts right out of my head.

*raises hand* What really gets me is the Shrieking Shack thing. How much did she really know about it then, not a lot, I wager. And Snape was probably not allowed to tell the truth about what happened from what we see him say. Sorry, but if someone had tried to kill me, I'd want to defend myself, especially to my so-called friend, but for whatever reason he couldn't. And did Lily ask for his side of the story? I kinda doubt it. i think she had gone her own way by that time and was looking for an excuse to cut the relationship off. Some friend.

Ah, but that's a just-black-and-white-and-no-in-between-gray way of looking at it, I think. Humans are more complex than that, and while these are quite obviously not real people, I can find many reasons [real life, human being-ish reasons] for why Lily gave up their cherished friendship ( ... )
