I guess she was trying to portray Lily as someone who would express her concerns but stop short of outright manipulation. I mean, I think it was pretty clear that it was the deciding point, where he needed to choose them or her, and when she mentioned the Death Eaters, he didn't even try to wriggle out of it. He wanted to have his cake and eat it too.

I think if he'd really been that terrified of losing her, he'd have made an offer to drop the Death Eaters when she said (yet again) how awful she thought they were. As much as I love Snape, he made the wrong call there. I don't think the blame belongs on Lily for this one.

I think she broke off their friendship because she cared too much. She could see what Severus was getting into, even if he couldn't, and she couldn't continue to be his friend and in a sense enable him to take that path. It's like he was a drug addict; she told him over and over to stay away from the pushers, but he wouldn't listen. Then he got addicted and she told him to get out of it. He liked the feeling too much to let it go (I think he WAS embracing the Death Eaters, despite his love for her). So finally she had to cut him out of her life.

I'm going to just jump in on this one and say I fully agree on the view of 'Lily and the Proverbial Straw' (maybe that'll be a fan-fic someday)

You took the thoughts right out of my head.
