Advice for new Spock/Uhura writers

There might be some new or returning to the fandom thanks to the new movie and want to write Spock/Uhura. Maybe they haven't seen the TOS or only the new movie and don't know where to start? Maybe they don't think something they wrote would be good enough?

What advice can you give to potential writers as encouragement? :)

What tips can you give about writing the characters? Maybe things to avoid?
