Sadly

Well, I guess I have the dubious distinction to be the first one on my friends list to make a post about this.

This morning, about 6:30, Jacob Balmer (Jukob) and his brother Isaac, were trying to cross the East Beltline. A car swerved to avoid the two, but hit Jacob. He got thrown about 30 feet from the car and died at the scene.

R.I.P. JACOB WAYNE BALMER
Dec. 18, 2006

He was a great friend, and I don't just say that because he's gone. Jacob was always unique and I admired him for being one of the few to really be a true individual. He always held his own beliefs on topics, he was very intelligent guy. He was trying to learn Arabic and he was always trying to make progress in his life. He got by without having a car in Grand Rapids, which precious few people can do.

Some memories:

- When I was dating Megan I remember being down at Blues on the Mall and seeing him a few times and saying "there's that guy with the cool sense of style - he dresses like an old man."
- When Jacob, Nick, Colter, and I went to Hell, Michigan
- When Jacob was the only friend who helped me pack my entire life in the back of a U-Haul and bring it down to Chicago to start a new life
- All those nights we stayed up light, a little drunk, having deep conversations at Steak'n'Shake
- Stopping in to visit him at the Schnitz
- Calling him with Colter from Cleveland to tell him "1) you're a Lewis 2) suck a cack and 3) you're mom's ass is blown out"
- Colter doing that motion of number 3 at S'n'S and Jukob trying to wrestle Colter
- The Baja Blast incident at Taco Bell on 44th & Division
- Those times in his apartments spent talking about life and death (and girls)
- "Bar puss"
- Going to Owosso with him and hanging out at the place in town where the punk kids hung out, meeting his parents... I met his cool friends and his brother and we went to Hardee's to get a "Dickter Pepper" as Liam would say and the Lion's Den in Perry
- Him picking up girls by challenging them to Othello in the 75 & 76
- Seeing Jukob "tossed" at Mulligan's
- Telling him scoldingly "Jukob!" and disapprovingly "Jukob..." and he'd say "Jukothy! Jukothy..."
- And a million other seconds I got to be with him and feel his life and vitality.

Well, old buddy, it was fun. You'll truly be missed, my friend! And so, for the last time, catch you later, you dog you.

"Arc Of Time" - by Bright Eyes

You can make a plan
Carve it into stone
Like a feather falling
That is still unknown

Until the clock speaks up
Says it’s time to go
You can choose the high
Or the lower road

You might clench your fist
You might fork your tongue
As you curse or praise
All the things you’ve done

And the faders move
And the music dies
As we pass over
On the arc of time

So you’ll nurse your love
like a wounded dove
in the covered cage of night
Every star is crossed
by phrenetic thoughts
they separate and then collide
and they twist like sheets
‘til you fall asleep
and they finally unwind
it’s a black balloon,
it’s a dream you’ll soon deny

I hear if you make friends
With Jesus Christ
You’ll get right up
From that chalk outline

And then you'll get dolled up
And you'll dress in white
All to take your place
In his chorus line

And then in you’ll come
With those marching drums
In a saintly compromise
No more whiskey slurs
No more blonde hair girls
For your whole eternal life
And you’ll do the dance
That was choreographed
At the very dawn of time
Singing “I told you son,
The day would come,
You would die, you die, you die, you die…”

To the deepest part
Of the human heart
The fear of death expands
‘til we crack the code,
we’ve always known
But could never understand
On a circuit board
We’ll soon be born
Again, again, again, again…
