Hi!   I'm excited to contribute a monthly summary of the visual rollercoaster that is Tumblr.   Each month I hope to share some lovely eye candy from across Tumblrland.
.
For those of us who have been on LJ for quite awhile Tumblr is an exciting place to explore.  It can also be overwhelming and confusing.  Several months ago I began to venture ( Read more... )

I think I am just too old to really "get" Tumblr. I ventured onto it for work, and curious as I am, I looked around for some SPN content. What I found was mostly teenagers, or early twenties, having really fierce shipwars with each other and people posting fic without cuts. It's just not my thing. For what it is meant to do - quick visual sharing of content - it works fine and it is actually pretty good. However, as with any social networking site, the users start using it in other ways too, like having conversations, and then you see the flaws. Just like people use Twitter as a chat program; it's not, but that's what it is being used for. I'm not saying it's bad of the users or the site, it's just that for me personally, it bugs me that people are having long conversations on my timeline that I can't even follow because of Tumblr's layout of quotes and conversations. Like I said, I am old and used to other programs :P ( ... )

I think I must focus on the visual and either don't *see* or don't follow folks that post a lot of fic or word content. But this is a good point. Perhaps on future posts I will try to call out which blogs might be more visual or fic based so folks can follow which they choose.

Yeah, I'm older as well. Sometimes I find it easy to forget that some/many of the Tumblrers are really *young*. And other times it's a bit obvious that they are younger. They are passionate thought, which is good. LJ is a bit of a safe and comfortable haven right now. More quiet than it used to be (perhaps). I know I've sometimes felt like SPN fandom is getting way too quiet - then I go to Tumblr and see that's not really the case. It's just changed a bit. I know my son's GF is a huge SPN fan and lives on Tumblr. It's both cool that she's so into it and bizarre that my *son's GF* (!!!) lives in fandom.

I am actually applying that strategy now too. Just unfollow (or not follow in the first place) when they post a lot of long text post. That's the main thing that bothers me on Tumblr, the long-ass text posts :P There's an easy enough way to use the read more link, but many people don't know how, so I end up scrolling down an endless page of text on my teeny-tiny mobile phone screen *eye roll* Not cool ( ... )

That's interesting about the average tumblr age groups. I would have thought it skewed slightly younger. When i first joined it seemed as though everyone was 17 and whinging about school. :)
Being older myself i try not to add any under 18's if i can help it and try and follow older fans...they are out there.

I love to do photoshop so it has been great to get feedback there and i have chatted to a few people of the whole they are lovely.

Some of the art and meta on tumblr is simply mindblowing.
